What makes them stick and require the introduction of a hammer to gently persuade it to work
I think it could be rust any thoughts I mean there's not much to them is there,Frankie

Solenoids are basically metal rods moving with in a magnetic field. there are a running fit but it doesn't take much to seize them up. It could be rust (although most metal rods are stainless) or it could be dirt / dust. Try cleaning it as best as possible. But to be honest if it an enclosed solenoid then you either replace it or strip it down and clean it

oh no I don't have a problem with mine and I have striped and cleaned one both ends off cleaned and re soldered but the middle bit seems like a fixed unit so just blew that out.

no I just wondered why they stick because they have caused there fair share of roadside problems over the years then someone taps it with a hammer and your on your way mad isn't it cheers Froggy all the best Frankie.
