sound systems! what u got?!

Just been on ssvc and there is some pics of various sounds system installs...not sure if this is right section but here we go - any one got advice on what's needed in bay to give good sound u can hear at 55mph?

I'm currently running a pioneer 4 x 50w head unit and 4 x 8" round speakers - 2 under dash in custom pods (I had in my bug 10 years ago) and 2 under rear bench. It sounds ok when parked up (quite powerful tbh especially as no ext amp) but as soon as u drive the bass is lost and treble is harsh.
The location of rear speakers isn't great as rear passengers sit above them and they fire.away from u.
I was thinking of moving front speakers into back and build them into buddy seat bases firing towards rear bench and run these off head unit. Then get a 4 channel amp and run some components in the front doors and maybe a 12" sub in one of the buddy seats.
What are peoples thoughts? I want it to be discreet as possible - but want to be able to hear my tunes on the motorway!
Obviously will be linked to leisure battery etc...

We run 4 speakers from the head unit and a small 10" sub with amp and its fine, would prefer to amp the speakers but it as ok, have you thought instead of overcoming the noise, maybe deaden it instead and you might not have to fork out so much on power.

I've got a pair of components in the front doors off the head and a pair of co-ax speakers in the rear side panels with a 10in sub under the R&R bed, all running off a four way amp, bridged into the sub.

Speakers in the sides in the back mean rear seat passengers can enjoy the sounds and make a big difference if I'm in the bus on my own or just front seats used.

Regarding the subs - are you running sealed or ported boxes? Anyone got a sub mounted in a buddy seat?

I have used some of the black dynamat style matting under the bench and over the rear arches.....

Good Idea just running speakers of headunit and getting amp to power the sub...

I think I will do away with my front speakers under the dash (always looked a bit "in your face" anyway!) and put them in the back but in the bases of the rear facing buddy seats. This way I will have 4 8" speakers in the back run of the head unit. The fact that I will have another set facing the bench will help. Not sure I could side mount these due to there size! :lol:

I could then get a pair of components in the front doors to get sound good midrange treble up front and run a sub mounted somewhere also run off the amp.

If anyone could post pics for inspiration that would be great.............

I've 13cm vibe comps in the front doors and 13cm 2 ways mounted in the rear tailgate board ( head board when as a bed) all amped off a fly 4channel amp. It sounds great and everyone seems to like it but im thinking of removing the rear speakers as its very rare that i have passengers and me and wife don't tend to sit with the stereo on when camping so might fit a sub somewhere.

I have an Alpine IDA 001 head unit and a pair of 8 ohm sound exciter, I like the exciters as no holes are required and they are only about 1.5" square.
I only fitted them last Sunday but they seem to good, I will perhaps look to get 2 bigger ones and set the smaller ones as tweeters/mids.

Unfortunately my list of necessities is too long right now, and i have to work through that first
Its on my wish list though. By the way, do you use it as your only sound system, and if so, where do you keep it whilst on the move?

Yes I do use it as my only sound system. My bus came stock with a block off plate and no antenna.

Here is how it travels,

At shows I put it up on the luggage rack and play it for the duration of the show. I have a jumper box down by the wheel that supplies power. That way I don't run my batter down on the bus.

I have actually made another box but it is smaller. I have it in the same spot as the first one, but I'm still debating on which one I like better. LOL I like the size of this one but the sound of the one above.

This one I was able to make it a little cleaner looking on the inside. It had removable materials.

I'm pretty lucky when it comes to the cost of them. I only had to put money for the suitcases. Most of them ( some are not made into speaker boxes yet) only cost me around 4 to6 bucks. The amps and speakers I get from my hubby's work for free. Oh, I do have to put out for the cost of the iPod wire. It cost my 3 bucks.

I have a big suitcase that I want to put an actual stereo in. I figure I could have an antena coming out the top. Just need to figure out a way to hold the stereo up so not to hurt the suitcase when traveling with it.

As JTH stated, blocking outside noises is cheaper than fitting a killer sound system. I on the other had have done both :mrgreen:

Kenwood head unit with an IPod connection and FLi speakers, 2 6 inch triaxal speakers in the cab kick panel, a triaxal 6x9 where the OG dash speaker was, 2 triaxal 6x9's under the rock & roll bed then a 1200w sub within the buddy seat. The sub and back speakers all run off a 1000 amp. The result is bloody brilliant! I put it down to triaxal speakers, which have low, mid range and tweeters all in 1 8)

Yeah I think you are right about sound deadening.....also the need for more power!

Will post some pics of whatever I do and let u know how I get on....winter project ready for next season...construct a new buddy seat around a sub/amp enclosure and fit a leisure battery. Time to rip the interior out I think for running cables!
