Hi all,

Anyone know where I can get a reconditioned or NOS steering box for my 71?

Steering is getting far too like stirring soup for my liking...

I'm too slammed for the creative box sadly.

this company will rebuild your steering box, I think for about £170

Thanks, I'll try and track down one for exchange for them from megabug or something

I got mine from Megabug, it's been ok. Not amazing. And was filled with grease rather than oil which I have been told is not a great idea.

Snap, ours is two years old now from Megabug, not had exceptional amounts of use and is already showing signs of wear (and yes it is properly adjusted) so not overly impressed given the cost. They never did manage to comfirm for me whether the reconditioned parts were hardened so I'm suspecting probably not.

If you're going to have other expenses on the front end (ie beam etc) then I would seriously consider one of these if you can push the boat out. expensive but good value if you tally up the cost of reconditionaing/replacing the parts it replaces.

Have you replaced the steering pin and tried to adjust it ? Changed the steering pin on mine and I could not believe the difference !

Interesting this is.....Mine sometimes feels like its slipping? Not a great review for Megabug then!. And they also took ages sending me my £100 back.

I've been told by a older gearbox guy, that certain companies don't replace parts in steering boxes (he won't touch VW stuff for any amount I offer  ), but just shim them until the slack goes and pack them with grease. About a couple of thousand miles if you're lucky and the box is f*cked again.

I got a used one off here for about £80 as mine had play in it ..

The used one I put on was loads better with hardly any play, but i suppose i fell lucky ..

.. if it was me i'd be hanging about for a good used one ..

I stripped the old one and noticed the wear was on the worm gear that runs through the centre of the box .. Everything else looked ok .. Im sure I saw a spare worm gear on here in the for sale section recently ..

it may be an option ..

The recon boxes have unhardened pins. I know because I took one apart when it failed and the pin was garbage. I have a really good 71 box stashed away that I was saving as a spare but I might be persuaded to part with it for a reasonable stack of tenners. pm me if interested.

BTW - don't pack these boxes with grease because they will die quite quickly. If the output shaft is leaking oil then fit new bushes and oil seal.

Anyone thought about going rack and pinion?, not cheap at £750??, during our last 3 years doing 300 mile trips down south i always feel totally knackered after 5-6 hours of rocking the steering wheel to keep in one lane on the motorway especially with the buffeting of trucks. Was wondering if this would be an effective solution??

Egos got one in the planning stages to go commercial if it works out, the CE one kinda stumbled a bit in fact is it not been taken off there stock?
