Boom - and the thread is 99% restored thanks to Adam - what a star
Hopefully the pics and info can act as an insight to others on the classic camper journey
Off to Skeg Vegas tomorrow morning so will try and get some pics uploaded afterwards!
See you peeps later

Have a good one guys, and Hello to Archie. I've been getting some weird notifications coming through about your thread Stu, notifications from a couple of years ago and a great big picture of the boy himself (Archie) so all good really. Guess it was something to do with your photo sorting out thingy. Hiya Clare, Hiya Stu. I really don't know why I don't go to this one. Remind me next year folks

Ozziedog,,,,,,,, Go Go Vegas!

Ozzie - sorry about the weird notifications! Adams programmer works a treat to restore the pics however it must trigger some unforeseen glitch! Oops

Back now and unpacked after another awesome Skeg Vegas. Weather was typically British with some spectacular downpours on Friday that left rivers of mud for some peeps to drive through.

Had a wicked time regardless and felt rough as a badgers arse today at work.

Some pics

Cheers Trevor!
No show report or pics this update however with our awning needing refreshing (it's lasted 5 years) we have been looking for a replacement.

We considered airbeam awnings by Vango and very nice they are too but didn't quite gel with the layout. Liked the teepee awnings out there and came close to grabbing one of those but again wasn't convinced with the open plan layout and the potential disaster of having a wood burning stove for Clare or I to fall into when "tired" or after too many late evenings.

We were sent a heads up by Baz of a nice little Rapido Folding Caravan that had popped up on a forum on Bookface.

It looked straight and original so we contacted the seller. It turned out to be a bit of a garage find. Was used once or twice in 1980 then cleaned, protected and pushed into a garage.

The couple who owned the Rapido have subsequently passed away and their son was clearing the garage and found it at the back under a load of other stuff.

So we have just been and picked it up after putting some fresh 8 ply tyres on, lubricating the suspension and brakes liberating some spiders. It's awesome.

Now for the pics

Got "Rita" back home no issues

The interior is as new and it came with the original key that works and a lovely optional gas heater that works a treat.

Looks great Stu, seems most bay owners own a rapido at some point 👍

"well jel" (as the youth say) of Rita's completeness and condition!
Our "Lil" is her long lost twin, but has been around the houses a bit more, so lacked a box, a key, and parts of that FABulous fabric.
Bashed box found but restoration a way off.
Found a military "aluminium fuel delivery hose container" first and feel duty bound to work on that first :-/
Enjoy!

Looks to be in awesome condition! Enjoy!

Been away camping this weekend. Last one for the season. Weather was good mostly and we had a laugh. Nice to sleep in the Rapido

Was awesome to have 3 bays and 3 Rapidos all in the same field. Good times

Great pics arent they Paul - taken by a real pro! :msn4:
Adam - you know you want to get one for your growing family - Rapido's are the future 8)

So - thought I would put a little update on the thread since I havent added anything since our last trip out in Oct!

Things are moving on fairly rapidly and there are some large changes afoot that will perhaps upset some of the Aircooled Purists.
To clarify if not justify my changes the mindset came after a rather expensive engine failure where a £3 valve stem shattered and destroyed the left hand side of my engine just before a trip to Europe and after a rolling road session. Thankfully I have the skills as a Mechanical engineer to rectify these failures and have always replaced components with the very best available however I became wary of the crap quality of the parts available on the market for us classic vehicle owners - and there arent any OG quality parts out there for our old motors/boxes.

I toyed with the idea of a big aircooled motor and 6 rib box to get more practical use out of Murphy however most avenues led to the same suppliers and crap pattern parts along with massive build costs for aircooled motors - even a warm 1776 was hitting the £2500 mark using my old engine as a base never mind the costs of gearbox rebuilds and potential future failures. The bigger the engine, the bigger the bill when it goes wrong - even when the part is pence that failed.

So this led me to alternative engines/solutions, I wanted to keep it straightforward and follow the path others have also laid so flat four power it was - and for the last couple of months I have been working on rebuilding a 2.5 litre EJ25 Engine from a 2001 Subaru Legacy that outputs roughly 170bhp mated to a flipped (SubaruGears) crate 5 Speed Subaru gearbox that has zero miles on it. Ive had the loom converted professionally so it is a simple plug and play affair - apparently!!

Before I complete a lengthy build thread that will be done in the next couple of months once im rolling again I still have to install the components as the bus has no box, engine or loom. Ive spent a few months stripping and rebuilding the engine from a short block - they are evolved aircooled engines with a water jacket so not difficult to work on.

For an idea of conversion costs for those interested by the time I am done and up driving again I will be around the £5800 - £6000 mark all in and I have paid to have the engine sourced and gearbox and loom converted professionally. Everything else is being done by me.

Pic is of the 99% complete engine after 100's of hours in the garage as a teaser. Happy new year to you all peeps and see you all in a field somewhere in the next couple of months.
