Van is stuck in fourth wont budge and this is how it occured

Drove 240 miles from yorkshire to surrey on friday suprisingly all in 4th non stop as the motorways were clear, however as i got off the M25 slip road i was stuck in 4th.

Managed through slipping clutch to get to safety around the roundabout and loosened the 2 bolts from the plate at base of gear lever and it released, went floppy and only got into 1st, but travelled the last 2.5 miles to the campsite in 1st(scary)

Rac man came out on saturday took the gear lever out cleaned up the mechanism re greased and seemed driving around the campsitesite that i could again get all 4 gears although the gearstick was a bit loose feeling.

Set off home and after 3 miles have changed down from 4th twice it stuck again and have had it recovered home.

Has anyone got any idea what may be wrong and point me in the direction of what to do as its at a mates garage but he's not a aircooled mechanic but will try anything on your advice.

Theres not been any noise from the gearbox and clutch seems ok.

Any advice greatfully received

Cheers.

Ady.

just had the same happen to me in france. It was the bolt on the linkage that had come loose. Real easy fix. I replaced the whole coupling and the result was unbeliveable.
