has the world gone mad.

Just seen a splitty on another forum for sale for 40K  .
Its nice but not that nice

I know its stupid & Its getting embarrassing now.I remember years ago, your old dub would come up in conversation or when you met someone & they'd comment on the engine being in the back or the lifting roof. Now, the first thing people seem to want to discuss is how much was it & the cost of them ( and Jamie Oliver  ).

I have mine cos I've loved them for years, even if they were worthless ££ wise.

There's a late bay on eBay up for starting price of £27,000, some restoration company trying to sell one of their show models. Just have a look at the rcc imports website for stupid prices.

But that's nothing compared with some, my mate has just sold his 23 window samba shell (no engine or interior, lots of work required) to a guy in Hungary who apparently travels round the world buying sambas then restoring to a supposed very high standard and selling to collectors, apparently he sold his last one for 97,000 euros!!!

Supply and demand :)

If people pay the prices, they are the right prices .... arguably ;)

It was commmented on at a show this year that the recession seemed to have pretty much had no direct impact upon the camper market/scene - I think we should be grateful of that. :)

yep, unfortunately everyone wants to buy iconic.

the US is still a good market.

thats nothing, i saw a (cant spell this so no jokes about my spelling!!) Shwimmwagon for $160,000.00

it did come with a machine gun tho!!

It's taken me 15 years to be able to afford a classic VW - when I started out in classic cars all I could really afford in the age/condition that I wanted were Triumphs and mini's - VW beetles/buses always seemed to command a premium in a like for like condition, but then I'm a convert and would say that after working on my bus I can see the engineering quality and materials is far superior to anything british leyland churned out so you are paying for quality!

Good news is that for the amount I paid for the bus and all the money spent after that, in a few years time, if I sell it I make break even :msn4:

Think that ship has sailed in my case  .
Chances are, if i ever sell i will lose bigtime.

15 years ago i nearly bought a bay for £300, with tax and mot and new engine. just its bumpers would be worth that now  . you can still do up things on a budget. if you are prepared to shop around or make do. if you want a bus that is either as original or fully loaded resto'd then you should expect to pay a premium. as with land, they dont make it anymore so its always guna go up in price due to demand. ive seen soom great late bays recently, and t25's seem to be riding high in the market. it seems the only thing that has dropped is splits. or have they just sat still and everything else caught up :D

Theres still bargains out there, theres regularly people posting up their latest aquisition at a reasonable price. Just because some vans are advertised at silly prices doesent mean they are actually selling for that.

This applies right across everything. Look at the price of antiques in the top shops compared to auction prices or the collectors car auction prices compared to the adverts in Classic and Sportscar magazine.

its true, supply and demand, so many are being imported that its obvious the demand is there, and human nature is to look after number one, so people get ripped off.

I know i was, but its getting done right now and despite the cost of parts especially NOS panels my oppinion is that its worth it, because iv always wanted to own one, and if its worth fixing, its worth fixing properly. im trying to find a deposit for a house and i know i could sell the van and have an easy couple of grand, but id rather do it the hard way because the bond between driver and van is more than money.

but look on the bright side, at least with all the shit going on economy wise, if the worst does happen, its an asset that doesnt depreciate. theres not much you can say that for.
