Hi guys
My 71 lhd has not been on the road long after a resto and it wanders a bit and the steering is a bit sloppy.
When I had adjusters fitted to the beam the anti roll bar was left off and I was told that I won't need it.
Question is do I need it?
How do I adjust the steering box?
Regards Dan

Early beetles and busses were not fitted with them so technically no, but vw did start to fit them so I would say they must help. Did you have the tracking done after the adjusters were fitted? You really need to get under your van and check for play in all moving parts including the idler pin while somebody turns the steering.

Hi Dan, it does sound like you have some wear somewhere if you`ll excuse the pun  Wasn`t that funny was it ? As said before, you really need to find our where the slop is as it is usually not the steering box but a ball joint or whatever. You need to get under it safely and have someone turn the steering from side to side so you can assess exactly where the slop is. With a little practice you can see which bits are making the components move immediately and what ones are sloppy. Start with the actual wheel then the flexi connector at the bottom of the shaft and so on and so on. It sometimes is more than one worn part as these old busses have been run on a shoestring budget for a long time.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Steering box is usually last

I would be getting under the bus and having a go at replacing the steering coupling
Mine was ripped and the steering all over the place - simple job to install a fresh one
