Carried out a few more repair/reconstruction jobs since.
Took out the big skylight mounted on the roof and had a friend carry out the fibreglass repair. Looks so much better. I decided to leave the small Electolux vent in the middle as it was both useful and unobtrusive.
Also a previous owner had butchered/removed the rear hatch spring frame assembly. I still can't work out if it was to create more space inside the back of the van or so no one would open the tailgate with the bike rack that was mounted on it?
Anyway, I like the idea of using my rear hatch as VW intended so I set about reconstruction.
I forgot to take "before" pictures but here it is midway.

This is the remains of butchered rear hatch spring frame assembly.

Ready to receive the donor frame.

Taking these springs apart can be very dangerous if you have no idea what you are doing. I like all my limbs and face just the way they are. Fortunately I found a VW "how to" guide on the internet.
