Coming along nicely, dont forget that on your to do list is take your twin silent pack exhaust in your right hand an launch it into the bush and get yourself a nice stainless single to finish off the hardwork on the engine ;) 8)

Thanks for all the input the rockers are a pain the side that did'nt fit was on and off like a yo-yo i hope i've got it about right. It will get the progressive carb for now £25 with manifold from a badly spelt ebay add(i can talk about spelling  ).Its been living on the bench for a bit too long now and seems to have attracted most of my tools to it which is not good when i should be working with them.I never knew an exhaust could in flame such passion,i have been admiring the stainless single ones i must admit.Cost and getting back on the road are starting to come into play a little bit anyway i though rust was good! :).

Thought i would clean up,paint and fit tinware with new cylinder head covers.Well repo cylinder head covers don't fit had to liberate with ball-peen back to German is best. Will need painting again.

Also trying to fit some single port tinware onto twin port into earybay.Bits missing/broken off so having to weld back some of the tabs and make fit.No flaps, thermostat, hot air pick up or pre heaters on exhaust so filling in holes/gaps.

Image0869.jpg

The lower part of the pulley cover was touching the exhaust headers so cut it off and welded in a reverse curve to make a bit more space.
So much for the easy bits to put back

Had enough of tinware the fan housing would'nt go down and back, alternator not sitting right, pulleys out of line, mainfold not clearing alternator auto choke against fan housing and just noticed cheap pulley that came with alternator kit has a hair line crack around the edge :(

Image0894.jpg

Anyway the main problem seems to have been the alternator stand that came with the kit it has a slight misshape to it and not quite inline compaired to an original one

Image0899.jpg

new one behind

Should have used the original one in the first place just thought i would use the nice clean new one and save cleaning an old one i had
the new one also didn't have the location bump for the alternator to locate on and oddly these ridges on the alternator was stopping it going back fully on the new stand
so all in all the stand is going in the bin closely followed by the pulley
with the original fitted and a small nick in the edge of the alternator edge for the mainfold everything then fits and pulley alinement is closer :)
didn't notice the pulley alinement when i first fitted alternator in the van now the engines out its clear so need to shim bottom pulley out a little

Last of the engine back together time for a bench test.Bit of luck it started. :D

Getting there now

Back on the road at last.Had to re-jet carb, change the heat riser,re-open the warm air pick up,add a manifold warmer and advance ignition timing.

Image0947.jpg

All in all the end result has been better than i could have hoped for.Went for first run today and could keep up with the traffic,MPG has gone up,more power (all be it still modest) and with the gearbox change quicker of the mark.

Happy camper :)

Yes a exhaust change will come at some point

1600cc on a 091 is fine take off is so much better. Before i would floor it when pulling away through the low gears and still not make much progress a single port set up on a 002 stump puller. When i used to hit sixty it was like the engine was going to leap out the back now it will accelerate up to sixty without alot of fuss.
Not Buses with attitude power i know but with drum brakes and no other mods as yet 60's enough to nip you up when someone pull's out in front

you should try stopping from 60 with a 4 wheel car trailer and race beetle on the back :msn4:

Back on the road so decided i needed a rear roof rack but couldn't find what i wanted so made one.Worked out Ok just clears the roof and fixes forward to miss gutter drain holes.Bit of luck it still goes in garage to

Well the 091 was a bit short lived it whined like a bastard and thats after paying good money for it and it supposedly being checked out! Not pleased
After looking into the cost of tools to sort it out myself i gave up and phoned a few transmission specialists and J R Dain had the tools and could have a look
So out it came again and dispatched the wife to drop it off
After about a week not expecting good news i gave them a call and was told its been stripped its had the wrong bearing fitted and a problem with reverse we'll sort it and give you a call when its ready.Great :)
I got a call back a day or two later all done and a very reasonable cost to
Now refitted,quiet and working well
So if your in the Norfolk area and have a transmission problem i've had good service from J R Dain

This is how it came back set up clean and ready to go

Just to rub a bit more salt in the wound after the gearbox problem last weekend i backed it out of the garage and the starter promptly failed so the neighbours took pity on me and help push it back in.I'll be glad when i can post some pictures out and about. :)

Got to love after market parts with a alternator kit. After getting back on the road and a few thousand miles I thought the cooling fan was vibrating a bit found this tonight.

The strap on the right had fractured so put back what is probably a 40 year old one on the left.

What I was looking at when I noticed the strap was how i could fit a breather box. I've been given one has anyone got a pic of how its been fitted its the sort with three pipes one for each rocker cover and on to the normal breather pipe.
Should it be central, high up so any oil can run down, the lid has no seal?crank case fumes in engine bay not good, front back of fan housing any thoughts?
Thanks
