Hey all,

Need some help trying to find out the law on changing the 3 point harness fitted to my van for a lap belt.

Currently fitted is 3 point harness.

Want to fit a lap belt.

The van is a Westy LHD US import campmobile 70

Built in 1969 but first registered in 1970.

Registered in the uk last month..

Please advise..

I'm pretty sure that given the year of your bus it will require 3-point belts to be legal and pass an MOT - although I'm sure someone will confirm...

But as an aside, why do you want just lap belts? They offer so little protection in an accident and you're far more likely to suffer upper body/head/pelvis injuries as a result. There's a good reason why manufacturers moved to 3-point belts!!

;)

When we had our bus mot's recently, we had 2 lap belts and a racing harness (for child seat 8) ) fitted. I told the mot man they were under the cushions, he replied that he wasn't interested in them as they are excluded from the test.
:D

it really depends on what was originally fitted.

I have had an oldish fiesta through the test with no rear belts fitted as that how it came from the factory. I was asking the test guy a load of questions (lights and seatbelt related) last week about the beetle and bus when i was getting the golf tested. He said that it depended on the vehicle really and they were'nt really sure

i 've got a 69 beetle to put through an mot in the next month or so, its an african import but been in uk since 1970, was used daily til about 2005. its got some strange DIAGONAL 2 POINT seat belts, never seen any before, just wondering if i will have any mot problems with it.
will post reply once tested..

Is it front or rear you are talking about/ rear yes you could change, but why?

if front  you must be mad, you'll head butt the steering wheel in a crash.

Not that we plan on having crashes but you need to work on the side of safety, I never skimp on , brakes, seat belts and tyres.

You could fit the 3 point belts with the old fashioned buckles if you dont like the look of the new interia belts?
