Dear All,
Please help me - this is driving me nuts!

I've replaced:
Spark plugs
HT leads
Dizzy cap
Rotor arm
Points
Condensor
Coil

Now I can't get a spark at all - I've used the John Muir method to set the timing statically:

I've got TDC on the crank pulley and crankcase lined up (I've checked that No. 1 is on the compression stroke BTW).
I've lined up the rotor arm with the notch on the rim of the dizzy - then wound it back a little.
I've connected a 12v light to the coil where the condensor wire attaches and the other end to earth.
Ignition on.
The 12v light is on - I thought that by luck the timing was OK.
I wound the engine on expecting the light to go out as I rotate the dizzy (to find the sparking point) but the light stays on all the time - even if I rotate it almost 180 degrees.

The book says that if the light stays on there must be crap in the points (there isn't), or that the points won't close - but when I rotate the engine with the dizzy cap off I can see that the point are opening exactly as they should.

I've double-checked the points gap (0.4mm) and all the other connections - but I can't get a spark!!

Please help...

;)

Take the connection of your light off the points side of the coil.

Now touch it to the points when they are shut.

If it goes out you have a break in the wire between the coil and the dissy.

If it lights up then put it on the base plate.

If it stays out then the points arent closing.

If it lights up then the earth wire from the base plate to the dissy body if off or broken.

Thanks for your reply - this is how I got on:

The light stays on

If it lights up then put it on the base plate.

The light lights up!

However, I've taken the dizzy out and checked the earth between the base plate and dizzy body and it's fine :(

What's going on?

;)

Watching post as my buddy is having the same issue with his Beetle! :party0051:

:?: have you fitted the new condenser wire to the live + side of the coil

If you have done everything as above then i would suggest swapping the condensor again, try putting your ild 1 back on (i take it everything was ok before you replaced all the parts?)
Had the same issue and it was the new(?) condensor.

All sorted now thanks to SJ on VZi - it turns out that the wire on my new points was broken (it had pulled away from the crimp).

Just goes to serve me right for having sausages for fingers!! I'll be more gentle with the next set!!

;)

Glad to hear you sorted it.

Though I dont understand how your test light could have been lighting when you connected it from earth directly to the points and the base plate if the wire to the points was broken.
