Coming back from vowo show on the m25 going a long a 65ish a bit faster than norm I notice a little smoke from back so pull in services lucky was just 1/2 mile away it had blown out a little oil and was hot but not to hot and suffer no lost of power
Basically I had over fill it oil just a tiny bit and it was blowing it out and need to fit breather pipe from filler to air filter and give it an oil change but was thinking would like a temperture gauge so whats best the dipstick or sump sender type
Also during the winter I fitted heat exchangers and all the pipes and bits ( lovely and warm) but if I remove tubes from dog house and cap as before would this improve cooling For summer

Which gauge sender? Its up to you really - they all work fine.

The dipstick one is quite long and looks a bit messy in the engine bay.

The sump sender is at risk of getting damaged or the wire ripped off if you go camping/off road/are lowered.

Theres also one that goes into an adapted oil pressure relief plug, which avoids the above disadvantages.

Personally I use one in the oil pressure sensor drilling in the block using a T piece adaptor.

Having said all that, I would never bother fitting one to a stock engine - I only have one now because of my dragon engine.

Removing and blocking off your dog house tubes is a really bad idea. It will not improve cooling - quite the reverse actually, because when the heater is in the off position a small amount of air is passed through the system and bled off, to cool the heat exchanger. If this flow is stopped then the exchanger will get very hot indeed and a proportion of this heat will travel back along the steel pipe using your cylinder head exhaust port as a heat sink.

Hi,

I have fitted a gene berg dipstick sender, personally I think it's one of the best pieces of kit available for a VW - very basic, I use it as an early warning system. From what I understand it activates the dashboard light before any serious damage could be done, no gauges or anything, like I said I think its great - obviously more info is available from google enterprises...

You can get a cylinder head sender too, it fits under a spark plug, usually number 3 due to its prepencity for self destruction.

I choose not to run a temperture gauge, ignorance is bliss  although I might with my 1776 new build :msn4:

:)

I realy like the sound of the gene berg dipstick sender seems easy to install no gauge and only tells when you need to know and by flashing oil light first so you can decide when to stop if not safe to stop if not straight away
But been on the gene berg site and they are NLA as of last year does any one have one for sale or know where I can get one does any one else make them
I use to think all these lights and gauges make you paranoid and believe ignorance is bliss but at clacketts lane services well lets say I've been to smaller club meets and this was not the happiness of meetings

Hi,

I got mine from Prowagen Performance which seem to be a UK gene berg stockist, was around 12months ago, I'm guessing they still do them?! Even if they are not on the site I'd give them a call...

seems good although i'd wire it to a different light, otherwise how would know its the oil temp not pressure?

Valid point, but i guess as the oil presure light comes on at 2-6psi, if your driving along wouldn't the damage be done already?

Though a nice bright led would be handy, but more wires to run, the simplistic approach is what they are aiming for. And a warning is better than no warning!

Cheers

yeah, true, guess if the oil light comes on at speed it prob is too late :(

Sad truth, unless at idle, the factory oil light is usually just notification that all the smoke is terminal and the engine just ate itself. The temperature dipsticks that send to the light at least make it useful!

Looking at the video, the pressure light, it will work as normal

Agreed

Oil temperature gauges are usually fitted because people don't trust that their engine has been properly built and maintained. Either that or they are too bloody lazy to service the engine a couple of times during the year. I've been driving aircooled VWs since 1968 and have never felt the need for paranoia gauges. The only two I use are the fuel gauge and the speedo - the reading on the latter has a dramatic effect on the former. So look at the speedo, the countryside, the road but why bother with any fancy temp gauge?

Rather strong opinion but glad to hear you've not had a problems in the past 44 years I'm going to fit the dipstick style got it on order from the states hopefully it will never light up on dash and happy days ,the other day it got hot not to hot I think but that's it I could not tell by looking and smelling , So it's more to tell me I haven't than I have :D
