Just back from an 800 mile week long trip to Wales and back, with my trusty but slow 1584 single carb. What's the view on pulling over when you have a massive tail back behind you? Up to Bets-y-coed today and we were slogging up in 2nd at a steady 20mph. I pulled in half way up, but got loads of abuse from the first 3 bellends behind me.

What do you reckon, pull in or Fuck em? Interested in people's opinions!

Cheers Chris

I would normally pull in but when you get the idiots giving you abuse it does make you think fuck em  If I can see someone is getting wound up right behind me I'd carry on as gives me a good laugh. It's like seeing someone else getting flashed by a speed camera, always make me smile a little bit. Does that make me a bad person?

I had a massive snake behind me going up the st Bernard pass in Switzerland so I pulled over at the first available spot ... I had a Scania wagon about 2 inches from bumper most of the way when he passed he gave me loads of Italian verbal so I shouted back in Italian feck off his face was a picture  .........I let them pass when I can there's no rush we're on our hols :D

Chris

I'll try the no eye contact method, sounds like a plan! Been using the old Madagascar penguin method of just smile and wave, but the wife's out of the window f'in and jef'in!

I to tend to stretch it out if it is REALLY anoying he bloke behind  I also must be a bad person.......

unfortunatly you cant be all things to all men, or woman for that fact, but the fact that you pull in and allow traffic to pass, makes you a considerate and experienced driver. i drive heavy haulage for a living , and constatly find a stream of traffic behind me. now i always try and pull in at the first chance i get, but to the uneducated, they seem to think that.. a..i shouldnt be on the road.. b....i could have pulled over sooner and ..c..how dare i impeed there progress. now my responses vary depending on my mood or stress levels at the time, and vary from a one fingerd salute, to a complete meltdown of throwing something out of the cab at them. now i wouldnt suggest you try these, as they can lead to the verbaly abused louis hamilton wannabe, trying to brake test you when you pull out behind them , but at 80 tonnes plus theres only one winner ...me..
dont let them intimidate you and the next time you get one of these super drivers just say to youre self....speed on brother..hell aint even half full, :satanlook: and thank the good lord for giving you the wisdom to be one of the few earlybay owners :party0049: as a professional driver i salute you and long may there be drivers like youre good self that drives with consideration for other road users no matter how pig ignorant they appear to be.. :beerchug: ...

If they get obviously annoyed, or drive too close, slow down a bit more. :)
Am I a bad person too.? :(

About 15 yrs ago we drove thru the lakes after a trip to scotland and any slight incline was met with a max 20mph speed,
(At the time we thought "it's just an old vehicle" found out the old acc. pedal was knackered  ) It was Easter hols and we must have had the biggest tailback ever  We even had old grannies giving us the finger salute on that journey. We tried to be considerate but there's not always a safe place to pull over. It was good getting revenge on the holiday makers though

Nope - highway code advises that if you are being tail gated then you should slow down and increase the space inbetween you and the vehicle infront to provide longer stopping distances ........ o.k. it's a bit tenuous if that distance is 2km > 2.5km between you and the vehicle in front but them's the rules :D

I pull in if I can and there are more than 8 or so vehicles behind me - if it's just one or two then I trust in their ability to overtake....

That being said - if the best way to overtake is to hang back, wait for a gap and speed up whilst in your lane then overtake - then why when people want to get past you would they sit on your arse weaving about? If this happens I generally assume they are in fact quite happy following me :)

I should add that I slow down when people are tail gating me in my daily - had it last week, on way to work through villages with a lady in an MPV right on my tail (assumed this was just her default following distance) - que me slowing down to 20 .... then booting it back up to 30 to create a gap, then when she caught up and rode my ass slowing back down to 15, 10, e.t.c. .... she worked it out in the end

They're trying to read all the stickers on the back of your van, or admiring your van from as many viewpoints as poss.

my current favourite bit of road around my way is the a47 as it comes from a single carriageway back to a dual carriageway, was cruising along the other week at 55ish with some prick weaving around behind me swearing and generally getting irate. his face was a picture as he tried to boot it past me on the duel carrigeway stretch and discovered that 55 was not my top speed  he seemed to be even more annoyed that he had to pull back in as wasn't getting anywhere

:) :) :)

were just back from Scotland, some seriously bad driving going on, doing 50 on a 60mph limit road with solid white lines in the middle of the road in the mountains and they still were flying past

I'll pull over as appropriate. I hate being stuck behing caravans, tractors etc so fairs fair. :)

I try to choose routes without hills so go via Bala rather than bets-y-coed, find it less stressful. Cocked up last week and found myself on wrong side of Dinas Mawddwy (bloody big hill), only place to pull over was at the summit so carried on and left them behind on way down at 70mph.
I am irritated by those that overtake only to sit behind the slow vehicle in front, love pulling up real close at next set of traffic lights to let them know im still keeping up with them :)

If only there was a satnav setting that avoided hills
