van: 1970 early bay

need advice it just picked up a type 4 engine rebuilt with stock cooling, bears are doing my gearbox for me 2 litre internals, bell housing etc just need advice as mines the rear detachable valance i will need to modify my engine bay. has anyone done this before and made it look neat also engine support bar is there a conversion i can buy or will i need to make my own? im aware its a tight fit and im going to step my rear number plate off and have a few air holes there approx 15 - 20mm diameter.

cheers guys

Hi, my early bay came with a Type4 engine in it. Wasn't for me however so I have converted it all back to stock, the previous owner had crudely cut the engine bay to bits but I'm sure it could be done nicely if you have the skills/tools. One thing you will need to do is remove the early engine mounts and replace with type4 ones, and cut the removable valance in half.

You can have my old cut-valance for a tenner if you like, would be a shame to cut yours up, getting hard to find a good one nowadays.. It's in good condish just needs the rough cut edge tidying up.

You can see the valance and crude fitment in vid below.

Here's a pic of one fitted really nicely into a Splitty (so similar to an Early Bay).

I think there maybe issues with standard cooling though, heat from the exhaust sucked into the fan etc might lead to running hot all the time.

Pic is from thread below:

Yep Im afraid lots of them are - especially if your not one of the longtime users who fits in with a particular click!
Has been better recently though and less aggressive

here's the same thing i posted on vzi.
I looked at a '71 with a type4 engine in yesterday, to quote for some welding work. It just about fitted between the chassis legs, but they'd trimmed the skirts down and cut half of the removable valance away. You also need a type4 engine brace bar instead of the earlybay moustache bar. My concern would be that the type 4 engine weighs loads which might be why vw introduced the gearbox hanger and mounts for extra strength when they introduced the type4 engine in '72. You couldn't add this to an early van without a load of work and a bellhousing with hanger eyes.

sweet. cheers bud. these are the answers im looking for! i need to put a 2 litre bellhousing on my gearbox anyway so i can look at a way of bolting that up. i have a 2 litre bar just need the hangers at the end now. i probably have something kicking about. its tinware and sealing off around the engine i need to think of now :)

cheers again guys any other tips would be gratefull

Could be worth contacting Paul Weeding over on the Latebay, bit of a specialist on type 4's (into vw's other than LB's)

thank you dude :D

I say go for it, my mate has been pricing up 1776 motors this week and quotes incl VAT have come in at £6.5k for a quality job using quality components by people who will guarantee their work no matter what. Now that will get you around 90hp. I would be inclined to pick up a used type4 unit with best part of 80hp from the factory, make a support bar and some tin wear and give it a go. Any motor can be made to fit with a bit of though and a welder.

You will need a bell housing of course and once your bolted to the gearbox it's a case of measure and make up a support bar that connects to the EB mounts using EB rubbers then your almost there

cheers bud started it today bears building me a gearbox to suit inc bellhousing and shaft :)
