***** managed to cock up a stud on the sump plate, actually decided to put 6 new studs on by locking two nuts pulling the old ones out!
Guess what 5 come out and the 6th ain't supposed to, I didn't know and didn't read the book first. Better get me self a decent manual...

Anyway have managed to wind the stud up into the engine and now can't get the cover plate bolted up because there ain't enough thread left.
Can't get two bolts on to wind it out. With the help of WD40 some pliers have managed to loosen the the nut inside the engine to get me some slack on the stud. My dilema now is how to get hold of the stud and wind it back out a bit!

Borrowed a special tool with roller bearings but this won't grab hold of the stud as its still to short so only thing I can think to do is try and get slimmer nuts and wind these together to get the stud out a bit...

OK advice please am I on the right track, any other ways , envisage any other problems???

stud extractors like these available on ebay cheap....drill a small hole into the stud follow it up with this counter threaded tap as it cuts and finally stops it will begin to remove the stud

Thanks for the prompt response, I see what your saying but the tread it isn't that knackered yet!

It's the stud that holds the engine oil plate thingy(?) and I've managed to screw it up into the engine but can't as yet get it back down. I've got about 5 - 6mm enough to get one nut on but not two so I can't lock two nuts together and unwind the stud. Don't want to risk grabbing it with mawl grips etc so thinking of alternatives and wondered whether anyone could advise..

If you drill a straight centred hole you'll be fine it doesnt need to be deep just enough for the tap to gain purchase...

Could you tack weld a small rod onto the end to wind it back with ?Then grind off an run a die over the stud to clean it up

Good luck

I was thinking along the same lines as this. You could put the nut on until it is sitting flush with the stud and then weld the stud to the nut ,starting the weld right from the centre of the stud.Once it's unwound to where it should be just grind the end of the nut until the weld has broken and unsrew it.If you're careful you shouldn't loose any length or damage the thread.

how about cutting a slot in the end of it and screw driving it out, or file 2 flats on it and spanner it out?

Cheers for the tips all gonna try wrapping coarse sand paper around an old stud and then clamping up mawl grips to see if it impacts the thread may give me enough to get a purchase on the stud and turn it as its free and has had a good soak with WD40 now.....If it looks like it may scour the thread then i may try mega strong lock tight the type you have to heat to break the bond! Same lines as welding really as don' have a welder down the garage at the mo...

Will keep you all posted!!

OK keep the advice coming the stud is free although and I got it out but doesn't seem to be the beef on the thread now once ceaned up to hold the nut on and it seems to screw back up inside the engine. So perhaps the nut inside is to loose.

OK shall I take the stud out altogether and replace this with a fresh one looks quite fiddly but looks like it can be done without spltting the engine casing am I correct in thinking this or not???

Now sorted and engine running wound out old stud and put a new stud in tightened up the nut inside the engine so alls good cheers for the tips etc.

This stud hold your oil suction tube in place and has a bolt head on the other end, I would leave it if you can if you do get it out your oil pick up tube will be loose in side your engine. To refit a new one will mean splitting the case. :!:
