Hello, I was just wondering if you Valve Clearances are out can it effect your MPG as I am only getting about 16MPG at the moment, but the Bus seems to be running fine.

alot of things can affect efficiency including clearances, but if they were 'off' would you notice with a much noiser engine and possibly some 'pinking'?

hmmmm....they might be then, I guess no harm in checking, I have not much money to get it in the garage and I am thinking of all the things I can do on my own, so any suggestions would be very welcome

Of all the things you can check, clearances are probably the easiest. You should have no trouble as long as you have a set of feeler gauges and a 19mm socket and 18-inch swing handle; or 19mm box-end wrench (ring spanner) and 13mm box/open end wrench (ring spanner)

Check the points gap too.

The ignition timing needs to be set after changing / adjusting the points though.

I'm over in Birmingham if you want to use my timing gun.

Thats a very kind offer dude, but I have no idea how to check my timing, I am sort of winging it on the whole lot really :D I want to learn how to do all of this stuff, but I seem to take the easy way out and let the garage do it. Shame on me

If you ever head up this way, I'll show ya how to do it ;)

Best to learn how to do it yourself than rely on paying garages :)

you should get yourself on to a techenders w/e usually in april/september organised on the JK website - it's free, apart from the £5 pitch fee, it's all 'hands on' stuff and you won't find as much technical knowledge/helpful people anywhere else, and you have a great time too - from being a complete novice just over a year ago, I can now do 3,000 mile service confidently

I prob will take you up on that dude, I will do my valves and see how that goes, least if I learn to do it I know its right
