Hello all, My mates van has recently just started cutting out when hot and usually at roundabouts and other awkward places.
The Van will turn over but not fire , if left for 10 mins it will start. When running it goes sweet apart from what I just mentioned. Its a 71 TP stock motor US import, any ideas please :D

My baja used to do that I could only put it down to overheating check your timing plugs etc also make sure nothing blocking the fan (when the engines not running lol) sometime paper and stuff gets in it

The engine rubber surrounds there?

Thanks for the replys, I'll give it a mini service and check the fan for him and see how it goes, its running a stock solex carb, whats your thoughts on the Carb, Easy ?

Hi guys, the original post by John was regarding my van. I haven't got around to looking at the problem as the van hasn't been driven, but I need to try to resolve this problem.

The van seems to idle Ok now (i noticed the oil breather pipe was disconnected, not sure if this would improve idle?), but it judders when driving quite badly now, as if there is a fueling problem.

I've notice that there is not a lot of fuel sitting in the fuel filter (which is still in the engine bay), could this point to a blockage somewhere?

Cheers for the replies, I'll get some pictures uploaded ASAP.

EDIT - sorry just read the OP again, the cutting out problem seemed to be resolved by adjusting the idling, but the an has now developed this juddering/cutting out whilst moving!

Both really, although it seems to be worse when hot.

I'm noticing a lot of air bubbles going into the fuel filter on throttle and fuel level (within the filter) drops quite quickly.

Any help much appreciated.

have you ever serviced the engine if not this would be a good place to start IMHO,

I have some parts up here that would help you do it, not that I would bother as its rotting away and soon to be in the scrap heap.

Air leak? Have you checked the carb gaskets/manifold boots/bushes on the accelerator shaft (look for fuel coming out/staining on the outside of the shaft)?

Slight air leak could manifest itself when warm/off choke as cutting out on idle - an increase in fuel via the mixing screw would compensate for this on idle, but would cause it to be rough at higher revs as you are experiencing?

Just a thought if you are going to be giving it a good going over

Firstly thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Lard...This sounds like the problem! Although i have no idea idea how to check where you suggest, i'm technically useless, more of an artistic person ;)....but will look into it!

Zedbed....cheers, where is the choke flap??

John.....Shut it :) Yea it needs a service, gimme a shout when your ready :)

To check for air leaks get it idling and you can then use WD40 or similar to spray onto the different area's and listen for a change in engine revs as the WD40 is sucked in

Also - is it a 71? In which case also check the servo pipe is connected at the front, it will come off the manifold (large pipe, right angled connected on the manifold below the carb) - you can take this off, plug the hole and then see if it idles better

Best of luck!

Do as Lard said before you go spending money on bits you don't need. Get the engine running and just go round carb, manifold etc with WD40 and if it momentarily starts running better, that spot there will be the culprit. Had exactly the same problem with mine the other day and found the gasket between the carb base and manifold was knackered. Took it off, cut a cardboard gasket and now sweet as a nut. Good luck.

Again, thanks for the replies.

John (who started this thread) came around and overhalled the dizzy, new arm, cap, condensor etc....and also fixed a sticky valve/flap on the oil drain thing (sorry not really sure what it's called)! It now seems to be running really well, took it for a quick drive and it's back to it's best.

Cheers! Need to start learning how to do the basics ASAP!

This problem has re appeared , more advice needed as I'm scratching my head.
Bus runs great through the range and at idle, the problem is when you pull up to lights and junctions, change down to first clutch in , then it stalls. Really annoying

Checked timing, air leaks, oil bath all sorted carb removed and cleaned, fuel filter changed.
Dizzy serviced with new parts and set.

Is there something internally in the carb that could be causing this ?

Have you tried the old method of reving the van and putting your hand over the top of the carb it can help sometimes
