My last "new recon block new internals" motor with totally stock setup, oil bath airfilter,34 pict 3 carb, stove pipe and thermostat and flaps etc used to weep after it had been for a run.
Now i have a new replacement block again with stock setup and this too is weeping from the oil breather pipe!
Could this be because the oil in the airfilter is too high and working it's way down the pipe and then out under pressure?
Or is it something else?Or have i missed something??
Strange how two engine are doing it or is it normal??

Regards.

By the "breather pipe" do you mean the pipe on the filler that goes through the tinware?
If so, what have you got the non-tinware end connected to?

yes the pipe that exits thru the tinware which is attached to the filler and comes out the bottom roughly by the stove pipe.
am I missing a piece? :|
if so is it like an end stop or something??
should it always weep??
if it is something I am missing what is it and where to get?

The top end shouldn't just be open to air.
I believe that there's somewhere to connect it to on the oil bath air filter?

Quick Google throws up this image which illustrates the set-up

It could be that the deflector plate under the alternator pedestal is fitted the wrong way round or wrong way up. I've seen this done a couple of times and it is easy to do as it can fit in any direction/orientation.

i've got all this, mind i have a different oil bath filter but all the pipes are fitted.
where the braided flexi pipe attaches to the filler breather is there also.
i believe it is weeping from the end of that.
is there supposed to be an end cap or something??

Here you go.

http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Rubber-valve-oil-pipe-253260180_act_shop.product_pID_45843_lang_EN_country_GB.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would check the oil deflector plate under the generator stand as well though.

Been watching this one with interest as I get a slight drip, some times weeks after being last used.
So its not really a breather but a drain & can be plugged.
Well that's me sorted, thanks to sharky & wig. :D

thought i was missing something.
when i built up the block to turnkey i had two gaskets i believe one paper and one metal on the pedalstal/oil filler stand inplace.
so i take it the bung plugs the hole and the build up finally discharges back down the filler neck????

No, it's a rubber bung with a slit in the bottom, so you'll still get a drip occasionally.
That's why later buses don't have this tube.
You shouldn't get a build up of oil unless the engine is pressurising the breather, the oil deflector plate is incorrectly installed or you've overfilled with oil.

not to sound tic,but how would the engine pressurise the breather??
i am pretty sure the metal gasket was the right way round as in down hill, would too much oil in the oil bath airfilter cause it??
i filled the filter to the red line indicated.

annoying spot of oil left on the floor after a drive in the van. :|

to double check the metal oil gasket is an engine out job is it not?? :? :?
stock carb and manifold gives no room for tools or fat sausages!!!!

so putting that rubber pipe would not sort it??
i take it the oil would gather in the tube and then release/dribble out when accelerating under load correct??

Your engine is a big air pump, even on brand new engines the combustion pressure can pass the piston rings into the crankcase. If the breather system should become blocked or restricted (by fitting shoddy aftermarket breather filters, or pipes that are too small, etc), the crankcase will pressurise causing the oil/air mix to force its way out through any other convenient exit e.g. oil seals, dip stick, filler cap, etc.

If you can remove the generator pedestal then you change check/change the oil deflector plate.

so with a total stock setup i must have a blockage somewhere??
i know the pipe from the oil bath airfilter has a slight kink in it but i would not of thought that would be the problem.
could it be the stock airfilter??
would it be worth checking the filter in the oil bath?is it possible to check them or are they a sealed unit??

so last question on this.......

will it normally leak no matter how good the engine is??
what I am saying is if it was designed to leak like that on a stock setup then so be it,but,if it should not leak at all then I need to sort it out.

from memory when I had ict's on the last engine ooohhh for about 150miles there was no leaking/weeping due to the breather box fitted etc but I would not of thought a stock setup would have leaks?
but again if VW spent thousands on RnD and it was designed to aid breathing then fair enough.
had a look at a picture in Tom Wilson's engine build book and the pic showing the metal gasket is the same way round as I put mine on build up.

thanks for your input sparkywig.

.

YES!!!

Occasional drip, not leak.

And yes the engine is also and mostly pressurised by a screw behind the bottom pulley that sucks a little air (pressure) into the crankcase, can`t remember what it`s called but there are some very interesting articles about it and what it does and how it helps. As Sparky Wigs said, the later ones had a slightly different set up possibly because of the drip factor which was pretty standard practice in motoring back then. Not sure if you could block it off and vent a different way to get your `drip ' in a different place like the air filter or like mine into a bottle
