I need help as I have a new canvas to fit but as the old one is long gone, I have no idea how it is supposed to fit to either the lift up roof or the rof of the bus !.............Any help, descriptions or photos gratefully received !.

Thanks

Hi

This job is not as bad as it looks if you cheat a bit:

With roof on, lift the roof to the up position
Remove old canvas and all fixings apart from support bars (leave staples in plastic strips)
Find centre and fit lower canvas all of the way around with the metal fixing strip.(make sure you have the canvas the correct way around - mesh on outside)
Start stapling the top at the rear in the centre, pull tight as you can, work out to the sprung arms
Leave enough fabric to go into the corners and start on the sides
Do sides first then work on the front, there may be a pleat due to extra fabric, but this can't be seen from the outside.
Double over fabric and staple again
Then go back to where the arms are, remove one at a time and support with a piece of wood, staple fabric and refit arms
Tap plastic strips back down and refit fixings.

I have fitted about 10 in this way and they are all still fine, I can fit one for you for £50 if you don't want to have a go yourself.

How long does this normally take - I'm thinking of a run out when the westy's done...fit a new top and then cruise back? or carry on to Cornwall for the weekend!

What Canvas seems to be the best option at the moment?

Hope to get my Westy MOT'd in the next couple of months and the canvas will be the next big purchase after that.

I am after the correct orange style as that was the original for my bus!

My motto is buy cheap...buy twice! I would rather spend extra bucks to get a proper job thick canvas!

Also thinking of popping up to Faux for help with fitting!

Hi does anyone know where I can get a new canvas for my turret top (similar to so42 splitty but just a bit bigger) tried most places but to no availe. would be great if anyone out there could make one from the original that I plan to take out in a few weeks

Just to let you know, I can fit these in about 4 hours, the better quality ones are easier to fit and can be bought from FBI, C&C and KK for under £300.

I may be fitting one of Rolf's soon so I'll let you know what they are like.

Fitting is now £60 from my house.
