Hi all

In the next few months I will be on the look out for early bay which will be my first bus. I have pretty much decided on a Westy & ideally a 3/4 berth but am unsure as the sleeping arrangements. In addition to the R&R bed, did all the pop tops come with hammocks or was a proper bed an option?

Am I right in thinking the hammocks are only suitable for children? Also is it only possible to get a 2 berth tin top Westy?

Finally are there any other conversions that would accommodate 3/4 adults?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Just talking about early Westys, the rock n roll sleeps two adults and a small child if needs must. There is a childs hammock for the cab area which sleeps a small person and the single cot in the roof sleeps another.
Real beds up top only came in from later bays onwards, I think.
Westys did come in tin tops with no upstairs.
The brochures also show a child sleeping on the buddy seat and stool, but I think that was artistic licence ;)

Thanks for the info & illustrations.

Do other conversions such as Dormobile & Devon offer a similar arrangement in that the extra bunks can only sleep children? If that's the case I'm wondering whether a tin top Westy would suffice as oppose to limiting myself to pop tops only.

What you are looking for is a nice 2 berth Westfalia Campmobile (tintop), quite a few around :D

Great pictures Clem but I agree not sure how you can sleep on the buddy seat and the stool and why has the Fridge/sink unit disappeared ?

For me a pop top isn't about sleeping, but been able to stand up and move around the van freely.

Plus the additional ventilation, a roof rack you can load without a ladder and all the extra storage space on 'the shelf'

:)

A westy continental (euro version) of the early bay westy has got a double bed in the roof. Double width but not full length i think.

The bunk in the pop top roof is designed to take up to 80kg I belive, so should be sturdy enough for an adult (not everyone I admit and it isn't that long).

I think (but could be wrong) the Continentals are from around 72 / 73 / 74 - may find a crossover but I think they are primarily the later bays with the front hinging pop top. However, I'm pretty sure the weight limit of the continental bed is also 80kg, so while it may be a bit comfier than the bunk, it won't be any good for 2 adults.

Of course, you could just buy an awning with a sleeping compartment if there won't be 4 of you all the time.

You can fit a later double in the pop, contact Dubberdaz on here he's done it, not sure if two adults will get in there though.
I do have some photo's somewhere cause were looking at doing it.

Yep, i managed to get hold of a double bed from a Continental. Fits straight in, two kids have slept up there fine. Not sure if it'd be spacious enough for adults, as it's not as wide as a double bed. But the length is there with the flap up (Access flap thingy).

Thanks for all your help. This seems a good idea & a better option than the bunk. I had thought of it before but wasn't sure whether the pop top was smaller than on the late bays.

The Westy in the show & shine at Dubfreeze was awesome (as is yours creationblue) & pretty much what I'm after.

I imported a 71 westy SO72/6 from california last year which has the double bunk in the roof. Its wide enough for two at a squeeze but only about 5feet long. see below. The bunk can be hooked into the pop top when not in use to give the extra head room and can take my weight at 100kg +.

I also saw an article on type 2.com last year about making your own bunk up there. try http://www.type2.com/library/camper/cotbed.htm

Thanks for the info. I think it's definitely worth holding out for an Early Bay Westy given the above options. My mind is made up :D
