Afternoon folks...

I'm going to strip back some steel wheels and give them a tidy up.

Anybody got any paint tips before I reach for Hammerite Smooth Spray...?

I'm no painting expert, only painted a few little items during my resto but was very happy with results of 2k out of a can. A couple of people thought it had been enamelled ! Didn't come out super shiney but I'm thinking of using it on my wheels

I did mine in hammerite smooth spray, it was horrible to use but once its done is vary hard wearing....just dont use primer
Next time Ill pay to have them blasted and powder coated

Cheapskate option (as used on my bumpers and wheels). Wilkinsons Appliance White 'enamel'
spray cans - as used for covering scratches on your washing machine !

Cheers

James

I agree with bwuttonmoon & James...

Hammerite smooth - bad - horrid stuff & not smooth at all.
Appliance enamel - good - did trailer wheels -smooth,bright & tuff enough.

Had a set of 356 reps blasted and powdercoated by a local guy with a good reputation. £30 a wheel and within 12 months rust was coming through, 24 months now and they really look like scrap yard salvage. Do it yourself, has to be cheaper and the result can't be worse. In my experience anyway.

Ok that has put me off... I did my hammerite wheels a year ago and have been outside over winter... no rust yet. Maybe DIY is best afterall

Blast and powdercoat should be the best option, sounds like something went wrong /\ up there!

If not get them blasted and painted in 2 pack (obviously not by yourself if you haven't got access to a filtered booth and the proper maks)

Sounds like he didn't seal the gap between wheel centre and rim and blow the blast media out before powder coating.
Had my 15" steels done last year and they're still OK.

Thats almost certainly whats happened..... I dont think you can beat blast and powdercoat if done properly.. however I cant understand why people have bumpers powdercoated, they chip really easily when hit by stones etc and are a bugger to repair because of the thickness of powdercoating.Wheels dont get hit much so not a problem

when I had my wheels powder coated white,I run a thin bead of white silicone sealant around the tight spot where the two edges meet.worked a treat and you can't see it !

I agree with pete b I had my 356s steels sprayed at a proper place and 6 months down the line all rim edges next to tyre is flaking and rusting.... What a bummer!!!!

As an experiment I painted them with household gloss  To my surprise, 5 years later they still look like new. Admittedly its quicker to spray them with celly though.
