Hi all

I'm having trouble charging my leisure battery looking to move to an alternator. There seem to be different power outputs. JK do 55 and 75. Is it better to throw money at the problem and get the hight rated one?

I fitted a 55 but for the extra 20 rubs I wish I'd got he 75 tbh :(

Sorry...more questions...

I've been looking at Machine7 and JK. They both have alternator kits, but JK include a fuel pump and Machine7 don't. Why is this and do I need a new fuel pump? I currently have a dynamo and the fule pump I have is new.

Thanks

Fuel pump on alternator model is different because dyno model hits the stand. You also need a different fuel pump pushrod to go with the different pump.

Also note if you have the stock carb the right hand linkage for accelerator pump will foul. You have 3 options.

1. Fit a spacer which you can buy that fits between the carb and manifold

2. Reverse the linkage plate on the throttle spindle

3. With an angle grinder remove a bit of metal off the casing where it fouls (theres enough meat to do this)

Don't get a kit from Machine 7! I fitted Grazy's kit which he got from there and I thought i was crap tbh. Try either Cool air or SSP, they come with all the extra wiring and a diagram ;)

Why is it that only the JK kit seems to come with a fuel pump?
Also it seems there are different alternators for 1600 and 1700-2000. I've got a type 1 1776 so what do I need?
This all seems so confusing :(.

Also this is a shot of my new fuel pump...can I get away without getting a new one? Do I need a new push rod?

i got a kit from machine 7 and a new pump from somewhere else but didn't need it. the one on there was fine. i'm sure someone will confirm this but i think the one that will fit will be slightly flatter in shape?

Baldrick, the one you have is the one you need as it is slightly angled away from the alternator, the circumferance of a new alternator is larger at that point than a dynamo, so you're ok.

However, Hipshaker you're right too. I could fit my new alternator with the og fuel pump and thought it was a bit of a con really as i had bought a new pump and rod as i had read i'd need to. I can only think that some alternators have an even larger diameter at this point than others. I bought mine from M7 and after a few niggles like the new woodruff key wouldn't go in the slot (got a new one pronto from them) all was cool. Are some better quality than others? I ain't got a clue!

Baldrick, how's you're new engine? Pm me when you have a chance, would be keen to know how you got on. ;)
