I've got to register my Westy this week,so I'm getting all the paperwork ready, got driving license,American title, insurance certificate,MOT,customs clearance form.

When I had the MOT done, they put the date down as 31/12/1970 as the first use date was unknown. It doesn't mention it any where on the paperwork.

On the M plate I have the date as 17th week ond on a Monday. (171) Does any one know what the exact date of this is? I can't work it out,I don't have a calender for 70-71! Sometime in January 1971 is all I can work out?

If I do manage to work it out,is that the first use date I put down? Will they accept my workings out?
Also will I need to find out the weight too,I have the dimensions from the westy manual.

Once I've got it registered will they issue me with the correct MOT too?

By my reconning it's the 19th April 1971 (I think VW used week in the calendar year rather than production year) assuming the first week didn't have to be a whole week.

Cheers for that.So it's birthday is just 9 days after mine.

If it says on the paper work date of first use, shall I put 19th April 1971 on then? Will they ask for proof of this?

Its the date of the factory build so not strictly the date of first use, how would you get the date of first use? thats kind of impossible to prove is it not, date of first registry now thats easier...

Do they put it on some US titles and not others?
Of course the build date is when it's scheduled to be built, then it's got to go to Westfalia to be finished, then shipped over to the USA dealer, where it waits for who knows how long, then it has a pre delivery inspection and registered to the first keeper in the USA.

So how do the DVLA work out what first date use to put on and what plate letter to give?

On my westy it has a sticker on the driverside b piller when you open the door and it says the exact date of registration.I took a picture of this and took it down to the dvla with all the other stuff you mention and got it registered easy

The sticker on mine gives the date of manufacture however the pink slip gives the registration...i think...

I don't have the sticker you mention,I have the certificate of title which doesn't mention the first registered date.I hope this is what I need to get it registered.

Just to be safe, what is the quickest way to get a birth certificate?

sorry to butt in, but get a copy of the paperwork as the dvla will keep the originals, when I registered ours it had a date of the american title documents as jan 1970 which is how the dvla arrived at the year of reg

Mines a 71 but registered on 22nd October 1970 in california, i gave them all the paperwork at my local DVLA, expecting a J plate but got a H plate instead. Would this have been because they had run out of local J reg's or was the woman who did it just thick.

never actually got round to going back and asking.

Do it on line http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/urkunden.html or I believe you can contact VAG uk and get it through them???

By snail mail can take an age 3 months for mine...

Cheers,I'll make some phone calls tomorrow to VAG UK see if they can help out,I went to that link, but I can't understand German!

I'll phone the DVLA first to see if what I already have is ok for an age related plate (should be a J plate) My only proof at the moment is that the Utah Title I have states the year as 1971

I phoned the VW Uk customer services and they emailed me a link for a form which I printed off. This is the Heritage dating from. Then I fill this out and send it to them by post or fax it.Sending payment of £29.38.Then a certificate is issued taking up to 3 weeks.

So I phoned the DVLA and they will give me an age related plate with what I have already, and it will show as 1st Jan 1971.I'll do this first as I don't want to wait 3 weeks to get a dating certificate back.

If anyone wants a link for the form to get a heritage dating certificate themselves, which anyone can print off, fill out and send off,I've put a link in the Links section of the forum.

I went to get this registered Monday, all looked like it was going well, but it was sent back to me yesterday  As I didn't supply a C&E 386 or 388.I had the paperwork form shippers I thought that was all was required.I've phoned the shippers and they're sorting it out now.Hopefully have it by next week :D I was planning to start using it this weekend too.

I got my Heritage letter from Volkswagen UK today, they've worked it out as manufacured on 15th April 1971.

Also after two weeks of chasing customs and excise, they've finally issued a C&E 386 :D .So should be with me next week and I can finally get it registered :D .At least now I can take the heritage letter with me to get a more accurate first use date. 8)
