Ok. I walk past the bus when it is sat with engine off and cool and there is a slight whiff of fuel. I have opened the back and no smell. Checked all hoses no dampness checked the fuel pump is tight. Is this normal? An old engine just having a slight whiff of what's still sat in the bowl of the carb?

Thank you in advance

Starting to warm up this time of year and so the vapour build up in the tank is more.
It is quite possible all you are smelling, is the venting of the tank. Worth a good inspection to be sure.

Although yours is '72 so there are additional expansion pipes and breathers with loads of joints.
I'd check all those in the engine bay and especially the ones that go up inside the rear corners.

The top diagram is '68-'71, middle one is '72-'79 and the bottom one for a pick-ups.

Dont forget to check the elbow from the top of the tank to breather pipes. Mine had perished and was splashing petrol out of it when the tank was full.
