just recently ive noticed a whirring noise when the engine is idling. It seems to take a little while for it to be audible as ive usually driven for about 5 mins and waiting at some lights or a junction when I hear it. But as soon as i dip the clutch to put it in gear, it goes away. :?

Any ideas??

Its one of those noises thats hard to put into words lol. Its a higher pitch than the engine noise so i know its different. One of those sounds you just know isnt right.

yeah i have that too, could it be connected to the oil leeking from the back of my engine?

not really connected as that will probably be flywheel oil seal ..... but more of a reason to pull the engine out and fix them both sooner rather than later as any oil leak will only get worse

One other possibility before you drag the lump out! Sometimes a slightly misaligned fan can touch the housing causing a whirring noise.

Easy way to check for a bad clutch release bearing is simply to depress the clutch pedal at tickover. If the bearing is worn the noise should quieten down or even disappear when the bearing is loaded.

I'll try that - cheers!

And you know, I did have a load of crap that was caught up behind the fan when I bought the van, had it cleared out so maybe this as caused it to mis-align. Will check it out. Many thanks

.

i had this.... it was the dynamo strap that was loose and then the tension of the fan belt knocked the fan out of line. Not good but sounded kinda cool.
