Why is this so expensive?

Hi Guys,
been looking on The Samba and found this. It looks the Dogs but why is it so much? It doesn't seem any better than the ones on here that are 8-10K. HELP? :?:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=724389" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I know it's got disc brakes and fancy delux trim but does that really mean it's worth 3k more?

Am I missing something?

One more Q please. Were EB's only converted by Westfalia. There don't seem to be many Devons or Dormobiles?

Cheers

Your paying a bit more for a well known bus I would guess, however "Dubberdaz" sold his late last year for a similar sum, it was a lot nicer in my opinion.

cause its one of the earliest and coolest about fella....lots o money ,but lots o bus too.....love it,
BUY IT DOOD

The ones for 8-10k i would assume will be pretty stock, or mildy lowered. This one has been modified a lot, so its really down to taste. It aint cheap to go low, i know from experience. If you want low and dont want the hassle this is ideal.

Few points from the ad.

  • October 1967 Westfalia, Westy

one of the earliest Westys in the UK

CB 4 inch narrowed adjustable beam, Split Bus drop spindles, Air Kraft Porsche 996 radial mount front brakes, Creative adjustable spring plates and a full front and rear air-ride suspension! Adjust the height of the van from the dashboard via the trick air management gauge and paddles! Flat Four Fuchs fully polished wheels (4.5 inch front and 6 inch rear). Also, I have just fitted a new old stock steering box!

    loadsa accessories too

As i said, all depends on what you want from a bus, this one is pretty damn good, but if stocks your thing it wont be for you

In terms of the price, 13.5k is the advertised price, remember its a buyers market at the mo

it`s that expensive cos it cost a lot more to do..this bus is seriously modified on the running gear front with a lot of "in house engineering" already applied by serious professionals. Not a back yard bus by any stretch of the imagination. There is a market that exists that starts at £15k and goes all the way up to £25k for busses like this so i`d say that this one is quite cheap even in todays unsure market. Have seen this beast in the flesh many a time and they don`t get much better...oh and it`s one of the earliest earlybays in the country...dare i say the world.....and no it`s not mine or anything to do with me ..i just love this bad boy. Would be that much better with a stroker in the back

So, it is worth it?
Doesn't mention much about the engine, body work etc. Should I be worried? I love the way it looks but I also have to be realistic. I have a family to take out in the Beast!

Advice please.

Only Westys were "official" VW camper conversions, other companies used to buy the vans & then convert them themselves, although I believe at some point VW did start supplying them to some conversion companies without any interior etc so that they could be converted more quickly/cheaply.
Also the vast majority of Devons/Dormobiles/Danbury would be have been RHD conversions so are probably less likely to appear on thesamba which is predominantly a US site, they are also less common in the rust-free/unrestored state than an import from the US due to our climate, and most US import campers are likely to be Westy conversions (westies were I believe more expensive than most of the UK conversion types and so less common over here).

There was also a time when panel vans were used as a basis for conversion in the UK(I think due to some tax benefits) , so windows had to be cut into the sides - not sure whether these are more prone to rust or not but they tend not to look quite so good in my opinion.

If I were buying a van now with the sort of money you are looking to spend then I would certainly consider a US import as there is far more choice in the unrestored/unmolested category. That doesnt mean there arent good unrestored RHDs available (Scott Wilson on here imports some good looking RHD buses) and there are still some UK supplied buses out there that havent been restored but they are definitely getting thinner on the ground and are likely to be more expensive than a similar US import.

Whatever you go to look at/decide to buy - just make sure you have someone with you that can give you a full and frank assessment of the condition of the bodywork as a minimum - if the engine or gearbox turns out to be a wrongun its relatively cheap to replace in comparison to having good quality repair panels (if you can even find them) welded in by someone that knows how to fit & finish them properly.

I think me ol mate Scot has hit the nail on the head here...its worth every penny..the build is outstanding, the spec is masive..try building one half as good for the cash.

I tend to avoid threads like this as most are just 'slagging' off the price.I can see you showing a genuine interest so thats a diferent matter, its alot of money and you are asking all the right questions.

I dont know the guy personally but have heard alot of good things which is allway reassuring when handing over your cash.Give the guy a call, have a good long chat and like said its a buyers market

Thanks again Guys,
I do really like it. It's a bit out of budget (there goes the kids savings LOL).

Is there much else to do to it to make it better?
I would still have to fit seatbelts for the kids. If I spent that much money I would have no space cash for anything else.

It really would need to have everything sorted.

God I'm tempted, no other problem. I live 200 miles away!

This van has to be the hardest looking Westy in the UK by a long shot. As for everything sorted I would not have any problems buying it when the current owner has a reputable name in the scene and even does all the technical features for Volksworld due to knowledge and track record.

Might be worth trying to do a deal with the 1776 engine that used to sit in the back rather than the 1600 as listed with the CSP tuck away exhaust.

Hey Kempy,
Have you seen this van in the flesh then? I presume you have since you know what engine it was running. Is the 1776 a lot better?
Do you know the Guy as well?

I was hoping to knock the price down a bit. Don't think he would with that engine in!
Cheers

Most people expect a little bartering fella you dont get if you dont ask, just call if your happy 200 mile drive is nothing to view a good bus most of us have driven the length and breadth looking for a bus.... get him to email you the build pics and take it from there....

Surely your paying for the fact that it's magazine featured....mmmmm....

Volksworld or Camper and Bus?

This is where I get confused. You think it would be cheaper if it hadn't?

There are a few things to consider here:

Are you after a bus like this?.....It has been done PROPERLY (No expense spared), there is no doubt of this, Matt is has a brilliant reputation. But it is in the small percentage of very early, deluxed, slammed Westy's. (I d' love it)

Do you need all of the expensive extras this bus has - Air ride, delux goodies etc. If not you could buy a good import and add the suspension of your choice for a lot less.

Do you want shiny paint......that would add a lot more to the cost but take a lot away from what the bus is.

This bus is a bargain....there is no doubt of that (delux bumper trim £500ish at the moment). If I didn't have the 69 in the garage I would be after this one.

(Seat belts cost about £90 to buy for a 3 point and 2 point and are very easy to fit, I'd fit a set for free for you if you wanted)

Speak to matt, tell him what you want and see what he can do.

If you want to get a cheaper ride, but still want to modify it to a similar stance then speak to Scott Wilson, Simon Hall, FBI, T2D to get a good base and set aside £2.5k to modify the suspension, wheels and brakes.

Just because it is featured it is not an inflated price, for example, there was an og Oct 67 Westy which sold for £6k last month, it had dented rear 1/4s, dented nose, needed new canvas and sink unit was missing. The bus was stock without all of the delux extras. This bus is ready to drive and use. It would draw attention wherever you went....magazine featured or not.

If I had the time I would like to add up the price of the extras......£££££s

Hey Faux,
It really is what I want, I love it. I do not want a shiny bus, to me a bus should be like the owner and I am certainly a bit rough around the edges, bohemian and turn heads wherever I go (ho ho ho)! I just want a super cool bus that I can take the family away in at weekends, to the shows and to France for a surfing trip. I need practical to a certain extent but I want something that's a bit different and original. This certainly has that going for it. To me it's perfect.

I would need the seatbelts to fit kids seats in and that would be it (hopefully). I shall give him a call, thanks for the advise. If I get it I'll definately come and see you in it.

Thanks
Si

If it was me and i'd got the money, the bus would be parked up outside my house by now 8)
This bus looks the bees, the only downside i can see / think of is that because it is a magazine featured bus and loved through out the scene you would have to keep it looking the way it does  AND get loads of pictues of it on here for the rest of us to admire
