Hello again!

Just after a bit of advice on the window rubbers. Currently mine appear to be crying black stuff all over the paint, and the more I clean them the more seems to come out (so I have stopped trying). I am looking to replace them because of this, and also I have a few spots of rust building up under a few of them that needs to be taught a lesson!

I am after some advice on:

* Are the JK window rubbers ok? Should i get some other ones?
* Any tips on removing the old ones?
And Mainly:
* Any advice on putting the old windows back in? :!:

Thanks again!
Graham

PS – Is the black stuff the rubbers degrading?

Well I would go to http://www.vwheritage.com very good quality I fitted a new one in my front windscreen about a month ago, there was a JK one in there before and it leaked now it doesn't.

The old one I cut out with a standing knife, you might want another person with you just to hold it so you don't smash it, in regards to tips, strongy on here was very helpful on the tips side, so give him a PM I am sure he will be happy to help.

The general concensus of opinion seems to be that the window seals from Status VW are the best for ease of fitting and longevity. I only ordered mine from Status yesterday (very nice chap to deal with) and will be fitting them fairly soon, so if you're not in a hurry to change yours I'll let you know how I got on!

I have to agree. Only bother with genuine VW seals, anything else is just ****.

true, cheap seals are a false economy, you'll end up pay alot more to fix leaks and replace them.

Genuine VW are very good as are West Coast Metric. I tried to squeeze a (non VW)German front screen seal (expensive from KK, after a very crappy cheaper Brazilian one from Heritage) into my bug. The German one was too thick and had to be pounded on to get it in, resulting in laminate separation. The Brazil one didn't cover the bottom corners (despite being told that nobody had complained before!), WCM fitted a treat, and last forever.

My '71 bus will be getting the full WCM treatment after paint this summer.

I must add VW Heritage sell both sorts but what ever you do just get a Genuine German one

It's always worth picking up seals at shows if you can wait til the next one you are going to attend or ask a friend to pick some up. You can tell the quality just by looking at them. Removing is straight forward using a stanley knife keeping the blade parallel with the window (i.e. cutting the outside half of the seal away) this is a one handed job whilst your other hand presses against the window ensuring it doesn't fall out. The rest of the seal can then be removed, after rust removal is completed refitting is a two man job, get yourself a nice bit of quality cord or washing line and lay it in the middle of the around the outside, make sure its nice and long so you can get a good grip. Push the window in with the cord hanging in the inside of the van. Get you mate to put some pressure on the window from the outside not to much while you pull the cord thus peeling the inside of the seal over the lip. Take your time as i've torn some seals in the past, so a bit of fairy liquid may help, and i've also seen seals dipped in warm water to soften. Hope this helps....Ben
