but I'm clueless about the electrics......
With that you probably know you need to call a local auto electrician.

It's going to be money well spent if your clueless and avoid bigger outlay if you make more mistakes.

It might not be a fried alternator, you can't really tell unless you test.

Should be fine just taking the earth wire of leisure battery , it shouldn't be connected to your main battery with ignition turned off.

Great ideas ozziedog. Thanks 👍
I'll be trying that when I've next got time. I'll let you know how it goes 😁. Yep, process of elimination!!! Thanks again 👍

Thanks for your input and advice pgtips and 67panel. I'm trying to find a local auto electrician atmo .
Thanks again guys, appreciate it 👍
I know of a decent VW chap in Gloucester and one in Bristol but not quite so far up as Worcester. Anybody else know of a decent person in that neck of the woods???

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,Andy,,,, who was your chap ???

If you have a leisure battery and the split charge relay is on because the alternator D+ has volts on it, that will connect the leisure battery positive to the positive terminal of the starter battery . Same with a VSR and a hookup charger pushing the leisure battery to over 13V ..

Both cases it means you still have 12v on the power feed to the dash..

Either disconnect the leisure battery negative as well, or pull the split charger relay wire off the alternator D+, should remove the leisure battery from the equation.

I used Iain Burns - "Aircooled Autoelec", he's on FB - he's based Chester way I think but will travel anywhere. He really knows his stuff and should be able to sort it.

Cheers Andy, and if he went down to you in Cheltenham/ Gloucester way, it may be feasible that he’ll travel not quite so far to help this dude too.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, doin be up and running :)

Yes indeed, I think he charged me something like £50 for his fuel, which I thought was reasonable.

Thank you guys for all your valuable information, I'm trying to get a local air cooled / classic auto electrician, but it's not easy to find one!! Who was the guy in Gloucester ozziedog?
Sorry for late reply but I've had the lurgi quite bad...ok now tho, and I must get the bus working again!!

Just need it back on the road for trip in late February 🤞.
Any one else know of a midland based auto electrician..... I'll keep Ian in mind if I can't get a local guy/ gurl.....Cheers guys....

That chap Iain Burns travelled past your area to Cheltenham / Gloucester and he is mobile, so don’t leave it to the last minute and maybe just ring him and see if he has availability perhaps.
Glad you’ve got past that lurgey. It knocked my Mrs about for three or four weeks, it knocked me sideways for a week but won’t leave me totally for over a fortnight or maybe more.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,does a pretty good job too, so I’ve heard from Andy. :)

Yeah that lurgy has been hangng on a bit, I hope you and your missus are feeling a bit better..🤞...it takes it's time leaving!!
Thanks for the info on Iain Burns.... I'll be giving him a call and I'll let you know how it goes 👍. Cheers buddy... and everyone!
