Ive not had a good experience with zinc primer it sprays too wet or at least the stuff I bought did, it ran like there was no tommorow.

The way I ended up making patch repairs was to flat back to steel as clean as I could get.

Treated any surface rust pockets with genolite.

Used self etch primer

Then high build primers

Flatted back

Then about 3 top coats which were then cut back after a couple of weeks drying.

I think as long as you remove any trace of rust before painting you should be able to get a few years out of the repairs.

Ive also tried POR15 in the past but was not happy with the adhesion to the metal, followed manufactures instructions to the letter but it still peeled after about 2 years.

Upol do a good zinc primer in a rattle can. I'm assuming you'll be high building over the zinc before your top coat anyway?

Tried a couple of rust killers, don't particularly like Hammerite Krust, but got a good one from our local motor factors. Just has "rust and scale remover" on the label and its a clear liquid. It's basically just a really strong acid.

Just a point to note check any rust remover you uses contains phosphoric acid, it converts iron oxide to iron dioxide which wont continue to react.

It does tend to be a bitch for running, but you can usually get away with it if you start with a drop coat.
