As some of you know I have been toying with the idea of getting together another 'more than stock BHP' motor for a while, so I thought I'd start a thread now I've got my base.

The plan is to build a new motor for the Scab that looks, at a glance, like a stock motor, but delivers a lot more. While thinking it over today, I have set myself a limit of spending £10 per BHP achieved on the dyno at the end. So for example if I end up with 60BHP, I don't want to have spent more than £600. You get the gist.

I won't be mentioning any figures until the end, ie its been run in and is driving, but I will reveal the final build cost, and final BHP figure, obviously.

This is just a bit of fun,and I'm hoping my £10 per BHP is a conservative guess, but who knows where it will run to. The costing will include parts and labour. Hector Howe will be building it up over the winter, so it'll be a slow build, and hopefully I'll be out to play in it next year when I've finished my degree (yeah I'm a student) as a reward for graduating, hitting the Hot Rod show in Chimay for a much needed break.

Anyway. I picked up an engine last week from a well known VW service. It was bought cheap as an unknown so I didn't pay much, but the spec as far as I know is this:

AS41 case, machined for 1776 B&P
Engle FK 8 cam
Straight cut gears
Autocraft 1:4 bolt up rockers
69mm crank, looks like its been balanced etc
Unknown con rods, but they're beefy and deffo not stock, look like they have been lightened
1776 B&P
T/P VW 040 heads, heavily reworked with big (!) valves
Chromoly pushrods
Widemouth pushrod tubes
8 dowelled crank and flywheel

According to the seller the engine hadn't even been run in before it started pissing oil and running like a bag of shit. So I pulled it apart before I handed over any money and found that most of the bolts were loose, the flywheel was hand tight, the oilways hadn't been set up meaning it wasn't getting any oil to the B&P, hence they need rehoning, but no biggie. They had also fitted the wrong crank bearings so the crank was flexing, hopefully a line bore will rectify this, else I have a rather expensive pile of scrap in my possession. On the other hand, I have just just bought a couple of grands worth on engine on the cheap!

I was also cheeky and said I wasn't interested unless he threw in some tinware, so I also got the front tinware and a twinport shroud, powdercoated black.
Here are some pictures...

Wish me luck! :msn4:

So first up, I decided to match the tinware, well the shroud, to the stripes on the bus, found some old gold paint in the shed, keyed the powdercoat... boom. Bling shroud!

I wonder how rank I can make this motor look if I try hard enough?

Interesting build Ollie, you gonna run the FK8 and 1,4 rockers? As we both know it's gonna be a quality motor if the big fella is building it. Good work 8)

Love the plan Ollie. Very achievable knowing how creative and thrifty you can be.

Loving the gold fan shroud. ;) Can't wait to see the final figures and what you create.

I think I will ditch the cam for a 110 unless Teatowel says otherwise. Am hoping to get down to see him (and you) on Sunday. Time will tell.

Thanks Chris. I take it by thrifty you mean tight?!
