Currently running a 1641 in my early bay with the following spec:

Engle 110
Twin Weber 34 ICT's
1:1.25 rockers
standard heads and crank
SVDA Dizzy

Thinking of upping the cc's to either a 1776 or 1835, not for high speed but just for better pulling when fully loaded.

Looking at the current setup, not wanting to change too much as I dont have a lot to spend, which is the better option 1776 or 1835?

Thanks

Hiya Matt,

When assembled with care a 1776 is just about THE most reliable engine you can build. Additionally, that 110 cam will fit right into that 1776 withno other mods needed. Actually, the only thing you'd absolutely need to go and buy (assuming here that all your parts listed are in serviceable shape) are the pistons and cylinders. So, on top of getting significantly more power from a very reliable engine, the whole 1776 project should not cost you an arm and a leg.

I agree. as with any kind of engine, the more you modify it from standard the more unreilable it will be. My mate has a 1970 Chevy El Camino with a stupidly tuned 7.4 litre V8, about 600hp. It goes wrong about 362 days a year

does the 1835 use a different cam/b&p combo or is that just using 92mm chocolate p&b?

if its the latter.. bad idea imo 1776 every time 69mm cs and 90.5 b&p tried and tested combo.

Im going 1776 and an engle w100 the 100 gives more low down torque for pulling. 1776 is most reliable as the wall thickness of the barrels is similar to the standard one. 1914 and 1835 have thinner walls and can go oval with use.

im jus collecting parts atm for my next one. prolly going 78mm crank 88mm B&P and a engle w100 cam. with some prog carbs and ported standard heads should make for a nice torquey motor.

obviously not really what he had in mind though as you'd need case machining and a few quid for new con rods etc etc

What about making a mini stroker? 74 or 76mm crank with your existing parts should fit would make a 1699 or 1745.

1745 is a lot of work - to get correct deck height. I've got one it's torquey but about the same as a 1776 with a stock cam - which for a camper is better - so the working rev range is where we need it. engle mild cam is ok too.

1776 if you're not thinking of bigger later [as me] as when I get my sh*t together I'm going 1955 or bigger.............

and get the bottom end, crank assembly dynamically balanced inc flywheel and clutch, John Maher did mine and it makes a big difference, and in fact I'd get a CW crank no matter what stroke I was staying at.........

it was about £120 from memory - which I seem to remember icluded return postage - seems a lot and adds to a build but the harmonics of the std wears bearings etc and is worth while investment imo.

I also had the std flywheel 8 dowelled so it maynot be as much? I would go with a counter weight crank for this reason.......http://www.johnmaherracing.co.uk/jmrshop/crankshafts.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I wanted to do this once if the engine gods are with me - so my crank will be here for this engine and maybe the subsequent ones too....as it's balanced it should last longer.

[Obviously regular oil changes and other bits need to be right too, but I'm sure you'd do that anyway]

the problem you have is the same as me small carbs - I have 36 Dells and to go 1955 or 2110 means a step up really in carbs as the carbs can be modded to be ok around 2l, but was advised they would be at their limit and may underfuel?
I'm likely to build the bigger engine and get it dynoed Before buying carbs in case the Dells can cope, I think the 34's might struggle with 1955 [76x90.5]?? anyone else know?

when you say dont want to change much you do know crankcase and heads have to be machined to fit 1776 ect p&b,stating the obvious :? but nobodys said it.you will be in for full rebuild, bypass oil, remote filter /cooler ect to make a good job :msn4:

I would go with a 92 thick walled pistons & liners kit. Same case and heads machining as the 94's but 92 bore, thicker than the standard 90.5's. AA makes them, I have a kit on my 2074 (78*92) and they work very well.

can't you turn the case end down on those too, so the case isn't opened to 94mm....some people don't recommend going to 94 on a non new case......I read somewhere

and you're right I meant 76 x 92 for my biggest choice on mine...2021cc

Yep aware of all that - thanks though :D

I was more concerned about the carbs - don't want to change those due to the cost increase.

Who sells the 92mm thick walled barrels ?

Imo 34's might be a bit small for a motor of that capicity. Weber 40's or 44's and Dell'orto 40's or 45's would be the best for that i think. 48's might be to big.

sure Laurie said that 36's depending on their condition that 2l is kinda the max they'll do - so huge valve heads, extractor exhaust and lairy cam might mean they can't keep up - a mild'ish bus motor might be ok. it was awhile ago and my memory is rubbish - most people over carb though - I've seen 44's on 1776's !!

I've got a pair of Weber 40's on a 1600cc, it runs great but thats about as big as you can go on a 1600. i know what you mean though, in the states i saw a set of Weber 48 IDA's with velocity stacks on a 1641cc in a bug
