Well, after a month or so off the bus due to home improvements  I'm back on it. Finished the brake lines tonight. Got a bit of an issue with the flexi from the Porsche front discs. I think I'm going to have to cut the bump stop bracket off as the routing for the flexis is ***** and there's a good chance the bump stop could crush the flexi  Bit more head scratching me thinks

Woah. Just had abit of a wobble and starting writing up a for sale ad.

Luckily, once is listed out all I'd done and the huge list of parts already accumulated, It changed my mind.

Phew.

Better get cracking

Day off work today so as well some diy and trying to fix the bug, I got the crewie out the garage for a bit of love. Decided the best option for the front flexis was to cut off the bump stops. I'm planning on fitting adjusters to the front beam in addition to the dropped spindles anyway so won't need them.

Bump stops are now off and clearance is goooood.

Tune in this week for hopefully more progress

Did a bit more on the engine tonight. Stripped off the cylinder heads. Good news is it's a 1600 single port and not a 1500 as initially thought. First cylinder head not too bad, needs a valve grind and missing a few fins but useable. Second cylinder head not good

I'm not an engine specialist but I'm sure it ain't supposed to look like this

Managed to source a few heads from an Angel VW Club member. Mucho appreciated Bernard ;)

A fellow Flat4Dubs member managed to pull a pair of heads together from the 5 I had, cheers Bob.
Engine ready to put back together now.

Decided not to replace the cab floor as I don't have the time or the money so started plug welding the holes. Turned out ok and will last for the time being. Put it this way, it's better than the previous owners ***** patches. Also managed to mock up my new accelerator pedal and hinge as well as my Buttys bits throttle linkage. Took it back off to under seal and paint so no pictures yet.

I'm slowly working through a list so it looks like I'm making progress

Are you meant to weld the accel pedal hinge on? I just bolted mine in for ease?

Bolted mine on as well, had it welded on but came off after a year and a half. I guess welding means less rust potential as no holes to outside world but defo easier bolted... with lots of sealer :D

Just bolted in. There were no holes in the floor as the PO had welded the last one in place so had to fiddle about getting it in the right position

Started to under seal as I go. Makes it feel finished lol

Definitely starting to look progressed. Everything between the chassis rails is solid so I spent a bit of time on my back giving it a lick of underseal. Really pleased with the results

Bought some lengths of 1/2" pipe to form the conduit for the handbrake cables. I might leave those until the outriggers and sills are done though.

Replaced the pipe from the header to the brake reservoir to master cylinder so all ready for brake fluid. Hoping to get the system filled and bled this week.

The Porsche design 90s on the rear had a big offset so we're rubbing on the adjustable spring plates  . So, I bought some 15mm Porsche spacers. Unfortunately the aftermarket rear drums didn't quite work with the spacers so I've had to tinker with the grinder to make them fit. I've also had to cut the bolts down that came with the spacers as they were too long.

Atleast no more tyre rub

The bus is due to go to the welders in 3 weeks as, even though I want to, I just don't have the space to weld the jacking points and sills.

Starting to think of colours too. I might leave it as it is, but as I'm replacing the window seals, I fancy painting it savannah beige as one of my previous buses was that colour and I liked it.

Looks very nice, good job!
Cheers

Had a spare hour on Saturday while the wife was out with the kids, so decided to start on the lower front valance. A lot of it was damaged with a bit of rust so the plan was to cut sections out and find some good metal to weld to. Well, that was the plan........

Further digging found more rust

So, out with the old

And, after 5 hours :x

All ground back ready for new metal ;)
