I am hoping for some advice. :?
My battery went flat and i have established the alternator is not charging. Can it be repaired by purchasing parts or do i have to shell out mucho coin and exchange it for a professional to re-build it?
Any help will be much appreciated :)

It depends what has gone wronge with it. First off check all wires to and from the alternator. If they are all secure and look to be in good condition (Check earth strap especially for good earthing) then it is a case of taking the alternator to an auto electrician for diagnosis. If the Diodes are gone then it may be a cheap fix, anything more then probably cheaper to buy a new one...

Good luck

Most alternators have an internal reg and once they fail you are kinda stuffed,

Heritage now offer an alternator that has a removable reg to future proof yourself against any further issues.

if you have an external regulator you can borrow mine to see if that fixes it.

Thanks Sam but it's internal

I was wondering if anyone has had one apart? I have read a few rebuild threads but on different alternators. I suppose i should get it off first

I hear Peter Good is a really helpful chap when it comes to electrics, he may be able to point you in the right direction, or his prices and service i hear are very good...

Thanks Matt-me, a useful contact.

Consequently I have had a result. I took the alternator off the engine only to find that it is similar to the type suggested by Alex with a removable regulator although it is a Bosch unit. Going to ring round now i have a part number to quote. :)
