My bus is all tucked up in my garage for the winter and I doubt she'll resurface till feb/march when the weather picks up. In the meantime I bagged myself a Merc 190d to roll round in.

Think this was the best thing to do as I reckon this winter will be proper harsh. At least i'll get some time to work on the interior, put a nice heater in the garage a cup of tea and I'll be set, protected from the elements.

Not at all.
Vans dont fare well in the winter, in various ways. They will rust, they will degrade due to water ingress and the freezing of ingressed water and its expansion. The constant damp from condensation isnt good. Brittle vinyl seats wont last if sat on when frozen! etc etc

Add to that the fact that theyre generally 'not that good' in extreme tempertures with limited visbility and it makes sense to tuck them away.

Its a hard truth, but those who shout 'hardcore' and drive them all year round are the ones welding for mot ;)

Mines been tucked up since after Brighton Breeze. I dont see the point running it in this weather it'll end up costing me in the long run. Plus its pretty solid and I would like to keep it that way.

Next time she comes out is just before Volksworld, unless we have a freak sunny weekend where I can go for a blast.

mines tucked up too till a sunny dry clear day without any salt on the road..............

truth be told i loves it! ;)

Confused now :?

I thought these vans (most aircooled vdubs) were good in extreme weather?

Also if it is going to be locked up for the winter, make sure you have the right conditions in the garage as if they are not, it could be just as bad as using it in this weather.....

Doesn't matter about mine as it isn't fit for purpose yet ;)

Even in a damp garage or just left on the drive it would be better than driving on the wet salty roads. The water and salt will get pushed into all of the cracks and crevices and may penetrate even the best laid protection.

But it is important to make sure your bus has good air circulation, evenwhen stored.

My bus is nicely tucked up in the garage - though I'm a bit of a pussy as if it's ever raining and I can get away with it my daily commute is this (still air cooled so that must count for something!):

Though (embarrassingly for a "hardcore" biker rather than a fair weather rider) I'm wussing out tomorrow and taking my wifes car as it's just to damn icy to risk the bike

Nice to see one of the other proper "air cooled" on here! 8)
Have you been on the hdrcgb site - if not also worth checking out, great people on there too!

I would be driving my bay all winter as I usualy do (including living in it) - but alas its been off the road since august when it was badly damaged in a head on. Buses as with all vehicles should be used as intended in my opinion. Instead of my EB I am doing my weekly 500+ mile round trip (to work and see the kids) in my 74 Jeans bug.

Nah. If i had a garage the van would be wrapped up safe out off the weather for sure.
Dont have a garage so got it under a cover at the mo!

well i`ve got a garage with loads of busses in and it was minus 1 in there today so blah...had to work in the spray booth with the heaters on....fingers and toes were welded shut by the cold and i`ve still got customers asking after there babies...ahh the harshities of running a business doing what you love.
Nice ride easy...not ..get a merc

mines tucked up in the garage been there after october fest and wont come out
till next oct

my camper has been safely tucked away inside the garage since october, though it should be comin out this weekend to drive to Burton......

"....I'm quite snug where I am if you don't mind!....."

I do drive my bus in the winter, but only on dry days (usually once every three weeks or so), and if the roads are salty when I'm using it, I give it a good spray underneath with the hose first, before I put it back in the shed.

Part of the reason for not venturing to far in mine during the winter months is that I still have the memories of driving the original family bus year round as my daily. I still remember now, seeing my dad in the rear view mirror, clad in his dressing gown, pushing me down the road until the engine spluttered into life, and then hearing his swearing when it coughed and died again, as the bus ground to a halt a hundred yards down the road!
