been working on the timing for some time, 71 bus with a 1600 no numbers that can be found and a centig dist (009?) not sure.
#1 should be right/front plug on the distribitor, in my case as I got the bus, it is right rear. I have tried 7.5 btdc and 10 btdc and even atdc, the bus runs, but quckly gets hot. My guess is the dist is incorrectly installed and as it advances the timing goes off, I have heard this will cause heating issues and that #3 can be as much as 4 dgrees off in firing.
So my question is can I unbolt the dist, find TDC on #1 lift and rotate the dist to the correct position with out taking it completely out? Any issues with this that anyone knows, after reading in the idiot book, I'm a little unclear if I want to pull it all the way out, sounds like a pain to get it and the other parts back in,,,,or am I over thinking this?
Thanks

Just for the sake of clarity, when you say front, do you mean towards the front of the bus or towards you? It should be the one closest to the fan shroud (waits for correction).

I believe a 71 1600 should be 5 degrees After TDC static, but it confuses the hell out of me. I just got the bus running, stuck the timing light on it and set the advance at about 4K rpm (by ear...)

I'll be installing a Megajolt system as soon as I can...

It doesn't really matter where the cap/lead is, as long as the rotor arm lines up with it when the engine is at TDC.

Different dissys line up differently. I've never had a 009 but I'm sure I remember reading somewhere they line up differently than a stock SVDA?

Anyway, try timing at maximum advance of 30 degrees BTDC at 3500rpm.

Read this for info on the 009: http://www.vw-resource.com/009_history.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and this for info on timing the 009 http://www.vw-resource.com/tune-up.html#svda" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks, for the info, Yes Jon,I mean facing the motor from the rear the #1 plug wire is closest to the fan, or forward towards the front of the bus, should have clarified a little better.

Don't get too hung up on the direction the rotor arm is pointing. As long as the HT leads are in the right position it's fine.

Think of the body as seperate to the shaft and rotor arm. If you have the dizzy out you see an oilway machined into the side? That should approx face the port inside the case so the distributor shaft gets lubricated. Then arrange the HT leads on the cap so that when valves for No.1 are both closed the lead to number 1 is where the rotor arm's pointing.

That's not very clear. :lol: You can spin the body 360 degs without moving the rotor arm, so get dizzy right for oilway, put cap on (it only goes one way), then arrange leads. If No.1 was at 4 o'clock (or whatever) it still will be.

Ya, I think I'm over thinking this ****. The distributor advances 20 degrees and is a centrifical one. I proved TDC with #1 last weekend as I was ajusting the valves, so depending how far I want to allow it to advance all I need to do is set the static timing and then check the advance with a strobe.
I'm going to re-read the above links again, although some times the more I read the more confused I get. :shock:

that is what all the books say, but the kicker is the distribitor type, I was told by a local Vw shop that if I have an 009 then set the static at 10 btdc,,,,I have now read so many opinions on what type of distributor goes with what carb etc etc that I'm a tad confused. .....

had similar issue in the past,the current dizzy i got is 009and when #1 is tdc the rotor arm is at 4 o'clock then rotates to 8 o'clock for #4 then 10 o'clock for #3 and finally 2 o'clock for #2.
i assume it was right for lubing shaft etc cos they's off set and will only go in one way??(shoot me if i'm wrong :( :oops: )
the old dizzy i had was different and when changed to current one i just slipped it in (oh er missus :lol: :lol: ) and replaced the cap only to eventually find the leads were all wrong(#1 and #2 respectively) yet it still started and ran quite sweet for about 200 miles til my last thread i put up then i found the problem :oops: :oops: :oops: :roll:
anyhows i got meself a new svda from accuspark with lecy ignition to run with the 34 pict 3 i currently run(long story) so will deffo check #1 tdc and fit leads to where the rotor arm is,IS THAT THE CORRECT WAY TO DO IT?? :?:
if not someone better tell me the right way :oops: :p :lol:
regards.

Thats right your spot on Sharky No1 TDC, you'll find your new SVDA will point nearer to your fan housing than your old 009,
mine would point at about 5 o clock but the Svda is at about 1 o clock now, then you fit NO1 lead nearest to that & so on clock wise. What you might find is your svda could be a tight fit it's the O ring so you may need to remove the clamp from your case then slide it on your new dizzy then it should go in easy that's the only hard part. ;)

no wonder we are all confused, my number 1 sits at 2 o'clock and 4 sits at 4 o'clock which seems one click off from what you had......as stated silly thing is it seems to run ok almost anyplace I set the timing except for the over heating after a drive at 50+mph which would tell me, by all I have read, that it is advancing to far......I need a drink,,,or two

Are you sure your 009 Dizzy is not faulty. :roll:

no, I'm not at this point sure about much of anything related to it, maybe I'll get some of this and work on it this weekend
