Thats horrendous IMO.

A stock engine will run better with a stock distributor, not a 009.

Unless you have a BIG motor and twin carbs which are unable to run a vac distributor, I'd keep with standard. Spend your money on a service, and it should start first time every time using all stock components.

If you still have problems, check your ignition and fuelling. Is it more reluctant to start if you leave it for a couple of days than if you start it, turn it straight off and then start it again?

If you do go with an 009 (not suggesting that you should of course), ive got a new boxed bosch one witted with a pertronix ignitor along with a new flamethrower that I'm planning on getting rid of.
Pretty sure I can beat that price

Runs a bit rough if i don't start if for a few days kinda lumpy. Seem to be having more issues if i drive for 20 mins then stop.

Turns over fine and no issues with fueling just getting poor spark.

Would i be better with new coil, leads etc maybe uprated?

That kit is a rip off. Those Pertronix leads are utter crap, the ends and tinware seals are so cheap and don't fit the spark plug well. It would be good to get a good quality Bosch or Beru leads that have OE style ends, the ones JK do are OK if you are on a budget. The Pertronix coil seems to be cheaply made, I don't see how it will have real benefit. My mate had that bundle and it caused him nothing but problems, the dissy is a chinese repro and wouldn't time correctly.

Why not just overhaul the whole ignition sysem, new points, condenser, rotor, leads, plugs and cap and stick with the stock coil. Set it up properly and see how you go. If later one you decide you can't be bothered to keep adjusting the points, then just get a Pertronix unit to replace the points.

what about the billet dizzy made by pertronix? is it any good? I have twin 36s (no vac) and need to get a centrifugal, and was going to go this route?.

any comments or experiences of this?

My bug (1776 twin 44's) has the flamethrower coil (black one) and the igniter (the bit that replaces the points), and I've had no problems with it all. If anything it appears to run smoother - but that could be psychological :)

Get some 8mm taylor leads from kerbside autos on Volkszone, working nicely on my van.
