Hello,I've got an engine case or two that need reconditioning. The first one needs align boring and number 1 main thrust skimming.
The second one needs the same as the first one and I also want to get the barrell holes bored for bigger cc's.

Can anyone recommend a place in the South East area that does this? My usual rebuilders can't do the align boring.

You could try GAC at http://www.vwracing.net but they might advise you just to buy a new case. for the money you are about to spend, it might be worth investing in a propper case thats already drilled & tapped & bored to suit.

Look at SSP or Cool Air, prices have come down alot with the Dollar being poor.

You could ship one or two in from the states cheap too.

Cheers Pete, you're right he recommends getting a new case. But I found a place in Erith Kent (Jim) that does align boring for £49.95.The case I want done isn't that bad and will go again.I won't get the other one done yet.I just need to get one built standard first.

Cool, £50 to get a standard one done is ok, it makes it a cheap engine.

It's when you get into performance stuff, it gets expensive. At least with a new case, you always have the option to align bore it if it wears out or breaks.

The new cases come shuffle pinned & clearanced for 86mm crank.

So there's your next problem, There is no way you are gonna fit a 69mm crank when you have all that space! Ha ha, 2007cc ahoy! (or 2110, or 2276 or...

Thats the trouble I keep thinking about what I could do,but it does get expensive getting the case, crank, cams, rockers, carbs etc etc.I'll get one done standard for now (get the bus on the road) and get him to look at the other one to see if it can be restored,I think one of them may be fubar as it was run without oil in it in the US of A and the case main bearings get wider towards the flywheel.Maybe pick up some bits from the shows to build a bigger engine later.

JH Aircooled did my barrel opening plus heads full flow etc..

Very reasonable but you will have to courier the bits to him or drive out to Dudley way.. .. also tends to have a bit of a queue or work at times.

The guys local to me want almost double and were not that familiar with VW aircooled stuff.

I took my 2 cases and 2 cranks to Erith today, the cases should align bore ok,but I suspected one crank was too far gone to grind and this was confirmed. My other crank which came with my Dormobile and I thought was going to be ok turns out it's actually a 64mm crank from a 1200  So whoever put my Dormy engine together made a complete bodge of it. 1200 crank, pistons upside down,2 different sets of 1600 barrells. So they can supply me with a reground crank for £89 which is genuine VW,I think I'll go with that as the new standard ones you get now are a bit lightweight and weak so I'm told.

I'll know how to spot a 1200 crank now at least.

Blimey thats a right mix match you have there
Atleast you've sorted it now...good luck with the build :)

Right,I got my case back at the weekend and I gave it a good clean up and one coat of engine enamel (on the outside).

Then put all the new bearings, cam, rods together, not forgetting the followers and cam end plug and the rods the right way up.The oil spinner disk is in but not pictured, don't want to do it all again!

Then seal it up and bolt it up and put it on a stand,I was happy to get to this stage yesterday evening and it all spins nicely. Now I'll let the sealant go off and finish it later in the week.

I need to put an order together and get some gaskets etc now anyway.

Err, did you remember the o-rings on the main (M10))crankcase studs ?
not fitted in your second last picture.

You probably have but you mentioned waiting for gaskets and they're included in the set.

Cheers

Yeah I put the O-rings on from the gasket set I had before when I done the top end of my other engine.I'll buy another gasket set though as it works out cheaper than the individual gaskets I need.
