and it used £10 of fuel to do just 16 miles aaaarrrrraaaahhhhh

How frustrating/fcuking annoying! Feel for you mate. Sorry can't help as I don't live that way. Hopefully someone can recommend a good local mechanic to you.

Get some tools and a haynes/bentley and give it a go yourself :) If I can get by then it can't be too hard! Once you've mastered the basics you'll soon save yourself a fortune in garage fees and the tools will pay for themself.

I'd like to go down this route - but would like someone that knows what they are doing to show me a few times first. :?

I've been lucky and I've had my dad show me stuff and help build my confidence with the basics. I still call on him for help with the more complicated bits but I'm doing more and more on my own now. Very satisfying and quite addictive once you start :)

Are there are any good clubs near you? I'm sure most people wouldn't mind giving you a hand to get you started

Volksmagic is in Oldbury and Kingfisher Kustoms are just up the road in Smethwick, have used them both in the past and both know what there talking about (hope these aren't the garages your talking about?)

thanks for the replies.i can do the basics ie bolt on bolt off jobs and oil changes ect but as far as setting it up to run well.
i would rather pay someone. and do an hour or so over time at work to pay for it.

well im going to try DC customs as there only up the road and im yet to try them.

i carnt comment on kk or vm but there not the guys i would use.

sorry i dont know anyone in that area but they can be finniky to set up to run sweetly you need to try and find some one hope fully not too far away that knows exatly what he.s setting and most grease jockeys these days are clueless on aircooled engines [e.g my son time served vauxhall mechanic ..modern engine no problems aircooled flat 4 ...goes loopy and starts scrathing his head] try your local v-dub club too see who they recomend before you spend more cash with a muppet who tells ya it needs a new giggling pin[thats the one fitted to the inner relay gasket flange seal]..just trying to cheer ya up pal..hope fully youll find a good one..

Happy to help if we can, we are Solihull.

Dave our mechanic is another earlybay owner (67 Panel on here) and knows his buses.

Getting it running well is trickier. I think it's one of those things that needs lots of practice. Been tinkering with mine for a few days and it's getting very close but not quite right yet

Hi,

I also live in Halesowen (near top of Mucklow Hill) - can't be of any real help I'm afraid but can vouch for the work of Graham L and Dave at Midland Early Bay, they've done plenty of top work on my bus!

I've also bought parts off KK and Volksmagic and they seem good guys although the VM guys can be a bit intimidating, great once you start chatting though! There's also a guy over near Clent (Airdubbers - I think) but don't know anything about him, google it!

As I say, Midland Early Bay for me.

Good Luck!

No, although I know the one you mean, never sure if it's a crossover or a late - always parked the wrong way round! Must be hiding it's shame!

I live a bit further on, jus off Chichester drive. My bus is actually with Graham at the mo, getting it back very soon though!

Whereabouts are you?

I agree with all the above posts. If it sounds like a bag of spanners and is using loads of fuel, then take it asap to Graham and Dave (who really know what they doing!) and at the very least have the valve clearances and timing checked out. If you MUST drive it like this then take it really easy (50mph) because the chances are that the clueless muppets who screwed it up will have messed with the timing, tappets and carb, potentially making it run hot. Also check the oil and keep it well up to the mark. My vans all do around 30mpg on a run so I get about 45miles out of £10 worth of fuel. Yours should do the same if its set up properly. When you have time get the compressions checked as well!
If you find that your so-called "mechanics" have fcuked up the engine settings, then go back there and demand your money back. DO IT - too many of these idiots mess with aircooleds and cause a lot of grief. I know because some owners end up at my place having had their vans "serviced" by the "local garage" and I find some real horrors
