Just starting to think about installing sone sounds in my early westy ready for show season next year and was after done advice as to the speaker sizes I should be looking for.

The head unit will be in the dash and I'm not after mind blowing sound, just something I can listen to whilst driving along / camped up.

I was therefore thinking if speakers front and back although where to put them is anither question in itself.

For the front I was thinking if putting them in the door cards so what size should I be looking at and also do you need slimmer speakers or do normal ones go in fine.

For the rear ideally I would have put them below the rear seat but the westy has a drop down door here so I'm thinking underneath the overhead storage unit instead. Should I put 6x9s here of us this overkill ?

For those if you with Westy's what's your current setup as this could give me inspiration

Kenwood Head unit
X2 Fli tri axial 6x9's in panel under bed
X1 Fli tri axial 6x9 in OG speaker spot under dash
X2 Fli tri axial 6" in cab kick panels
12" 1200w Sony X-plod sub under buddy seat.
1000w Fli amp powering sub & rear 6x9's

Sounds brilliant

Winter improvements are gonna be an amp for front speakers and to power it from a split charge system.

So to get the 6x9s in have you done away with the front drop down door? Also how tight are the 6s in the kick panels as there doesn't seem to be much room what with the headlight bowls and water bottle etc

I replaced the OG westy panel under the bed with some Buffalo board and mounted the 6x9's into that, It's nice and thick which helps the sound quality. As for the 6" speakers, it's tight but they do fit in there ok. I'll post some pics tomorrow :)

No problem with the doors, theres plenty of depth. (Dont forget to protect the back of the speakers from moisture though).

It is amazing what you can get out of a reasonable quality pair of mids and tweeters. I like the JL Audio that I have fitted to a few buses. They have an in line crossover which works well in a bus.

I have always mounted these in the kick panels and feel that a small sub would compliment them well but have never bothered due to space and the refusal to cut any interior.

If you're not looking for high quality sound or mega-watts, you could try one of these.

My brother has one in his 54 Dodge 5 window pickup and it sounds decent. The neat thing is that the sound changes depending on the surface it is mounted to. Some are completely independent and have a memory card/power supply built in, some require an MP3 player-like supply and others are powered through a cigarette lighter. There is a demonstration video somewhere on Youtube me thinks. I will probably try it in my bus when I get a chance.

Cheers people, kick panels are looking like the way to go and then I just need to work out where best to place some speakers in the rear (then get the leisure wiring plumbed in etc but thats just another task on a long list  )

Put mine in the doors.

Alpine iDA-X305S Head unit in dash
Alpine PMX-F640 4 channel amp under rr bed
Focal BUS 20 active sub under rr bed
2x Focal 165v30 speakers in rr bed panel
2x Focal tweeters either side of blanket box
2x Focal 165v30 in lower doors
2x Focal tweeters top either side of front screen
pair of Focal crossovers behind kick panel

Sounds alright in the back but not too good up front, still need to buy and cutt holes in new door cards as I made up some flat bars to bolt the speakers to inside the doors, really like the head unit though as I only use an ipod.
