Hopeing to get my van on the rd and get out camping this year. Are awnings worth while they look like a useful bit of kit what do i need to look for any recommondations and what sought of money do you need to spend also presumably you need to be able to drive away and leave it up?Any advice would be great thanks Rik :D

I've got a Khyam motordome sleeper, found it to be a fantastic awning. Bought it to replace a JK tunnel awning which was crap. Lots of others on here have them as well.

Also got a Motordone Sleeper and can thoroughly recommend it. We upgraded from a JK awning which was a big disappointment.
The Khyam is a little more expensive than some but very well desined and engineered. It d=goes up very quickly without hassle so we find we use it more often, even for a single night.Great for chucking everything out of the camper into and we also use it for the portable toilet.

Go to the next show and have a look around the camping area and talk to the owners. Better than any shop!

this is the dogs , pop up tent that fits quite neatly to the side of a bus . not purpose made as an awning but it works.

can you leave this up and drive away and where do get them how much thanks Rik

I've got one of the Khyam awnings, the smallest at about 2.5m x 2.5m, suits my needs spot on.
Seems to be well made and is a piece of cake to put up. There is enough provision to peg it down so as to withstand a huge gale, but I generally just use half a dozen or so pegs and four of the guy ropes.
It doesn't fold and pack away as neatly as you may expect if used to conventional tents, but that does make it easy, just collapse it, roll it up and stuff it in the generously sized bag!
Well worth the money because it is so easy and quick to use.
I'm well chuffed with it. :D

Got mine from Fishbrain. I organised a group buy and got a reasonable discount from them. A year on might be worth arranging another. Speak to Mark

Kyham motodome for me. So easy and quick to pop up and collapse down. Creates lots of extra space to chill/cook/dine in etc and also has an optional inner tent to sleep 2. Its easy to disconnect and drive away too. I picked this one up on ebay for £250.

Hi Rik, I've just picked up a Kyham Driveaway XC on ebay for £260. As the chaps have been saying on here, the advice I was given was to go for these as they cost a bit more, but are well worth it. Good luck with the hunt!

I just took delivery of a Khyam Sleeper awming from these guys

scroll down the page for the bargain :)

I paid £279 for it. {it's the 2010 model but who cares :D }

as my family got bigger, I found the Khyam Exelsior wasn't big enough & switched to the JK Hamburg {I think}, a decent enough awning but prone to ripping in the tunnel section}. Couldn't wait to replace it with a Khyam though.

Now that Khyam do the sleeper awning, it's a no brainer :D

Graeme, where did you find out about the site? Gutted I could have had a new one for the price I paid on ebay! Now saved in my favourites.....

Good work fella!

We only paid £199 for the Driveaway XC with the extra groundsheet from Khyam direct, that was one of the deciding factors along with the larger "living" area.
Couldn't really see the point of paying twice as much for a smaller awning that was slightly quicker to erect.

Hi there, i`ve also got a Khyham Driveaway.
I bought it 2 years ago at Volksworld show,
it`s a good bit of kit.
Holds up well in wind and rain.

got mine direct from Decathlon and yes they stand alone

We have te "Navigator Kombi" from Fishbrain. Loads of space, even when the 4 birth inner tend is up, it's huge. One ting I like about it is that the inner tent is to the side when you step out of the van. So many awnings seem to have the inner tent right in the way.
