beetle steering box question

Hi all
Not an EB question sorry
I bought a brand new steering box for my beetle and its got some sort of grease in it
not oil as i thought,i tipped it upside down overnight and nothing came out.
Should i leave it as is or fill it up with gear oil?

Unfortunately all I can say is gear oil sounds right from
all the posts I have read. Hope this leads to the answer.

Depends on the year, really early bugs had grease in them. But it's all too common for new steering boxes to be filled with grease instead... I'd recommend filling with 90wt hypoid gear oil, assuming it doesn't leak too bad
