Ok guys I need some help here.

for those of you who are about to help and would like to see my van follow the link below.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=59380

My camper, who I've decide to name Laura, is nearing the final stages of "getting her done". All that remains is the wiring problem which I'm going to rewire the whole bus, the Brakes, but then there is the Engine.

I am going to be keeping her as much stock to look at but I would like the engine to have a bit of poke.

I will be putting an Eagle Cam in her as I know this does improve performance but I am wondering if there is anything else I can do.

The engine she has in her has a H code on the block which i have found out to be 1500cc and it's single port.

I have bought an engine block with the heads on for a twin port, I was told this is a 1600cc

Seeing as the original engine sat 24 years I was going to strip and rebuild her. We got her running whilst in the states but I couldn't remove one of the spark plugs. She did run, but as you can imagine after not being started for so long she was running rough.

So the question is what modifications can be made or added apart from the cam and what should I use as an engine block.

I read in another thread that you can turn a 1500 into a 1600 maybe even a 1641 without boring out the head, is that true ?

I am no mechanic but I have stripped and rebuilt an engine in college a few years back and bought the " how to rebuild a vw engine " dvd of ebay and watched it a few times.

I have made a bet with my friends that I'll have her running and on the road by May 1st.

fortune favors the brave... good luck.

im afraid i cant help with the questions but someone will.

Things like twin carbs such as Webers or Dell'ortos, uprated ignition system and a decent 4 into 1 exhaust system are a starting point, but if you have abit more to spend consider porting and polishing the intake manifolds and the cylinder heads :msn4:

On my 1600 tp i've done a light bit of porting and polishing, better ignition, a Bugpack exhaust and Scat higher ratio rocker assemblys. I've got twin Weber 40IDF's but they've fooked up so i'm after another set if anyone has any ;)

It's not a 1/4 mile monster but will push my Westy along at ease.

I cant remember off hand but the H block is a 1500 Type 3 one? If so its limited in potential due to being a single relief case? I think ....

Build a nice strong 1600 with your cam (maybe?), a quality set of twin carbs, a good 4-1 exhaust system and electronic ignition. Ensure its all set up well and tuned correctly. It'll get you started, and if you choose the correct components you will be set to go further to a 1176 for example in the future should you so desire without having to replace what youve invested in.

H code is 1500 beetle case (or split),the first one with twin relef valves,it wont fit your bus without adapter as no rear mounting bar fixings, you can up ccs 1.6 or1641 just change pistons /barrells,if you have 1600 twin port bus engine use that, you can tell as 3 bolt holes on case around oil pump (10mm bolt dia) :)

hello matey.. i spent around £600 on 1641 pistons engle 110 cam kadrons electronic ignition and a set of 1.25 rockers full rebuild done by myself.. to be honest im a little disapointed.. dont get me wrong it goes well but was expecting a bit more.. i would build urself a nice 1600 with some weber 34s and be done with it, until u get some money together for a 1776 or bigger.. buses are built like a house brick and about as stream lined so they need alot of power to give it what ur looking for.

mine come as a 1500 single port and before i built this one i rebuilt that one to a 1600 sp..to be the honest it was the bollox.. should have kept it really. no point going 1641 on a single port... hope this was in anyway helpful.

Hi guys.

you all deserve a pat on the back.

from what I can tell there's not much I can get out of either engine but twin carbs and a good exhaust will be a step in the right direction.

I had a look on the samba regarding engine codes which is where i found out it's a 1500. it was in the splitscreen when I bought it after it sat on the guys drive for 24years.

I was hoping for some information like tweeking the timing or doing something with the heads might get something extra but I guess not.

whilst in the states last year I was driving Steve's (wolfgang in redding )57 split and the thing went like the wind, got to 70 as quick as a modern car and would go a whole lot faster, but with it being stock height and the weather a bit blowy it didn't feel safe. I was hoping for something like that.

Thanks to everyone that has helped and if there are any more info keep them coming.

if you haven't read the link to the ssvc and my camper have a look and keep an eye out for us at RTTS at the end of May :D
