I have done about 300 miles in my van in the 2.5 years I have owned it. I have only slept in it once. It is on it's 3rd gearbox & 4th engine, 3rd front beam, 4th set of wheels & another set waiting.

No matter what aircooled VW you own, it will be the same old thing, once you are on top of it, it gets a whole lot better. I can see light at the end of the tunnel now.

There is no substitute for hard work!

300 miles on 3 boxes and 4 engines???? typo surely?

Shit happens mate, but as everyone has said "It will get better".

You have a very cool van, it is extremely solid and original and will be worth the wait.

The only reason things seem bad is because it is all happening at once and that becomes expensive. Owning a classic car is expensive, I put £100 a month to one side to keep mine on the road......though this does go on other things at times.

Keep smiling and take it somewhere local for a trip away and you'll see why you bought it.

No typo.

Engine 1, 1600sp came with the van, was fine, but wanted better.
Engine 2, 1641, 40's, 110 cam, sweet. Mrs nice stole it for her Oval.
Engine 3, 1600tp, new B&P's, all detailed. Leaks flywheel oil seal, got the arse after 6 tries. Now its on the garage floor.
Engine 4, 2007, engle 100, 1.25 ratio rockers. Nice...

Gearbox 1, Jumps out of 4th gear,
Gearbox 2, borrowed for Big Bang, then removed.
Gearbox 3, T25/late bay hybrid, sweet.

Wheels 1, stock wide 5 steels.
Wheels 2, porsche D90's
Wheels 3, stock small 5 steels.
Wheels 4, Gas burners MWS 5x112.
Wheels 5, Fuchs yet to be fitted.

Beam 1, Stock.
Beam 2, Lowered.
Beam 3, 4" narrow & lower.

This is what happens when you think you are going to sell your van, then change your mind!

I'm feeling a bit more philosophical now. It only takes me about a day to get over things.

I shall hopefully get the engine sorted next week and will be rolling again soon.

Apart from the engine, she's ready to camp!

ahh dooood so you wont be at 'lobb-on' for the surfing!

thats a gutter :(

hope you get it sorted, i've just been out most of tonight fixing my brakes as a flexi hose collapsed which caused the brake to jam on which blew the cylinder seal and also shagged the brake shoes... just what i needed.

the scary thing was it gave way going down a pretty steep hill and i pretty much lost 50% of the brakes whilst fluid was pissing out all over the rear tyre.

fingers crossed it should be all ok for the weekend now.

Think we all go through this at sometime.

However when your sat in it having a beer or brew one night camping you'll know it was worth the hassle.
Also just driving it makes me smile, you wouldn't get this when towing a caravan!

or sat in a tent

Chin up dude, atleast it can still bring a smile to your face when you look at it !!! My mate at work had to get his 57 reg c4 towed from work as i drove off in my half sanded/nitromorsed bay.....so no more mocking from work mates :D You would still get probs with a modern car but would get charged at least twice as much by the time they plug there lap top into your car to find out wot probs you have.

Hi Windsurfer

Sounds like my first year with the current van.

I spent the first winter after I imported it rebuilding the entire brake system, had the engine out did every thing I thought needed doing.

Any how first long holiday in it it bent a valve in south wales, we got home on three cylinders which too ages and destroyed the engine in the process.

Right looked at rebuilding the engine it came with and by the time I had costed getting crank reground, heads reconed etc, decided to get a remtec recon unit.

Fitted that, every thing seemed to be fine ran well, went to france on a two week holiday and guess what it broke the crank in two 3 days after we got there.

So now on third engine which has been in for two years now and done about 15K, only had the regulator go in the last year.

As others have said it can be painful for the first year while you fix all the stuff that has been neglected over the years.

My only advice would be to do all the service steps in the bentley manual, repack wheel bearing, change gear box oil, change brake fluid etc. At lease by doing this you will have a good starting point because you will know every thing has been done.

It gets easier and cheaper and more fun :D .

Ian

ive had my van over three years now and appart from the dreadful drive home in it from preston to nottingham doing 45mph max (due to a serious air leak on the carb) i only did about 10 miles in it before taking it to the garage to find out what work it would need to mot it. the van has been off the road since :( i would give my swollen testicles to be in your shoes at the mo mate. these are mear teething problems you are having and you van will surely be awsome when you get them ironed out. :D

Hi Guys,
Stump, you're so right about new cars being dodgy too. Saw a 58 plate renault on the back of a wagon today. Made me smile.
Ian, cheers for the advice. You make a lot of sense, I do plan to keep the bus well looked after.

When to take it to have the engine sorted today and the clutch cable snapped but like you say Andrew, these are just teething problems, I will get my Bus sorted soon, I'm just a little impatient.

To be honest, I think Andrew deserves THE perfect bus after what he's been through  Saying that, I couldn't handle any more kids either. Two's hard enough so FOUR :msn4: Eek

Yeh, unless you can afford to buy a minter you have to get used to the ups and downs ov classic VW ownership.
I paid 4k for my rust free US Bus in about August (ish) time last year and put another 3.5k into it. Its also quite hard to see ware the money has gone. I still have no headlining or interior.Even when i do itl be far from finnised.Theyre not a waste of money though as said before in this thread, i could easily have spent the money on things that i would have most probably smoked, eaten or drank away and still be skint. Good to have something to show for your troubles.
Going camping makes it all worth while  .

Why havnt you enjoyed your welcome into the VW world?

Just because I've not even camped in it yet. All I've done is broken down and pumped money into it

I'm feeling far more upbeat than I was before to be honest, it will get sorted!

Good to here things are looking up. My bus was off the road for a year when it was being resprayed as the guy liked the weed and it was touch and go whether the bus was to be scrapped...I have spent a fortune on it and still have no heating...

Wouldnt swap it for the world though (even if it is off the road at present)

si...gutted for you man!!! but hey...pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get the engine whipped out and fixed! then get your ass on the road for the surf camp out in 2 weekends time!!!! you gotta be there....i m looking forward to having a butchers at your van!!!!

My clutch cable snapped the day after I did my gearbox swap.

It does test your patience, that's for sure.

I have gone for a bigger engine & am now having cooling problems...

It just goes on.

Fair play to you
We all (classic VW owners) feel like that at some point im sure, i did.
Could be worse.
Heard through the local grapevine on saturday about a fire damaged splitty being recoverd by a local recovery company and had to go take a look. Turns out it had just finnished a 24k restoration, the tuned motor had only coverd 300 miles and the headliner was only fitted last week. The fire had gone right through it.The engine had got so hot that there is now basicly a lump of melted metal hanging off the gearbox.Completely warped body, doors wont shut, no glass, interior, exterior etc..etc... you get my point, things could be worse.

Rich

I have just been through a similar thing - new engine required which means that now the only thing left not replaced in the gearbox - I am now patiently waiting for it to drop out one day when I am nowhere near anywhere helpful.

Dude, that's one of many Rock 'n Roll classics. You need to listen to Led Zeppelin 'Stairway to Heaven', Kiss 'Crazy Nights' and anything by Aerosmith.
