Before I pull my rear hub assembly totally to bits does anyone have any thoughts on why the brake drum rubs on the back plate?
Bit of history, when I bought the bus and started it's resto I noted a job to do, that was to replace the left rear stub axle. Sometime in the past a previous owner has had to cut off the hub nut and has cut it off right through the shaft at the point where the holes are drilled for the split pin. It has been reassembled and a hole drilled through the nut and shaft for a split pin.
I am thinking that perhaps the spacer in between the bearings may have been cut down too to allow the hub to be pulled further on to the axle so the nut can be done up properly. This would obviously mean the drum would be a little closer to the back plate too, consequently causing it to rub. If so, does anyone know what length the spacer should be?
I haven't replaced the axle yet but I have replaced the back plate and drum with new so I know it is not them that is causing the problem.
As a temporary fix I can space the drum off the hub slightly with large washers but obviously this is not ideal.
So, any thoughts?
