I preferred it when they were dirt cheap, I think the moneys ruined the scene a lot

Out of interest, how?

I'm in 25 years now and I can't see it. More, better vehicles. More specialised approaches. Better information and integration available. Lots has changed but more due to natural progress and society, but not due to buses being more expensive, imo. :)

I think that one beneficial side effect of the increase in prices is that it's now cost effective to make parts that, until now, weren't available.

For example Autocraft now seem to be producing more panels so there is another alternative to Klok******

It's also made some marginal 'basket-cases' a more sensible choice for restoration.

What exactly is the 'scene'? Am I part of the scene because I own a vw camper, or is there more to it? Do I have to attend every show and meet up and down the country? Do I have to only use old original knackered vw parts or are good pattern parts ok?

I don't think you have to be seen at the scene to be in the scene!
but if you are seen at the scene then you are in the scene I suppose

I've always taken that to be someone who owns a bus and is aware of/takes part in the wider community - shows, events, web communities, magazines etc etc :)

I'm a member of a forum, often buy overpriced magazines with poor content, often pay through the nose to attend vw shows in the rain , I guess I'm part of a scene then? WOO HOO!!!

Wish I had a surfboard on my roof now! :D

It's not just buses, everything has gone up! One bedroom pokey arse flat in London = 400K, pint of stella = £5 and classic cars and motorcycles have gone up across the board. Add to that the resurgence in popularity of all things "vintage and retro" it only makes sense that Earlybays, will go up as well. It's basic supply and demand.

One thing I would suggest, regardless of the condition of your van, get it valued and re-insured to reflect current market prices. Rising prices just makes them all the more attractive to thieving scum.

Price of van £5k (71 Ozzie postal panel van) getting it on the road, lowered front and rear on R9, late bay brakes, servo, 1641, twin carbs, electronic bits 'n' bobs for the motor, a good dose of welding, fat exhaust, recover the seats-R-R & buddy seat £1000 alone! puts me up to £11 k + mark and I am not really sure if that is right. Still needs the front welding the horn fixing and the insides doing.... It is difficult to find someone, bar yourselves to fully understand just what goes into these things, at the end of the day to Joe public it is just one of those vans...

There are a lot of people now with enough money to buy into the scene and sure are enough out there happy to sell them a way in... you only have to look at the shite that will be in the 'for sale' section at Busfest, People put another £2k on just for the show and it sells... I work on the trade gate there and it is the same characters that turn up each year with their latest offerings.

Being as old as God's dog, my first bus '69 twin slider Devon' was £400 and if memory serves I sold it for the same some 5 years later, in much worse condition as I was poor and it was bodged... I think the demographic of owners has changed and not the scene, I have been fortunate enough to go through life without having to sell the bus to fund things so have been able to grow with it but to get into it now would be a mare.

T4's & 5 are packing out the shows now as the type of person that wants the scene but doesn't want to be flat on their back in the rain trying to change their CV joints and getting rust in their eyes is a different animal... van-west this year was a case in point, we went down and had a grand time, made better by the company and the beach but, I think there were only 50 or so air-cooled there the rest were builders vans, the trade stands also were great if you wanted some sort of fat colour-coded bumper or stainless steel drinks cabinet or electrical doohicky...

So to sum-up, yes they cost a packet and will forever do so and never be finished but.. when I am sat with friends by the fire with a beer watching people go by and smelling the BBQ's being lit in the evening or the hour when a lot toddle off to bed and there is a roll-call of sliding doors.. it is well worth the money, so who can blame people for wanting a slice ?

As for the scene, Tick these off if you will;
Trilby hat, regulation straw, rough edged.
Tattooed legs
Long shorts
wrap around shades
Dog with neck scarf
Radio flyer
Club sweat-shirt
list of bits to buy
Daft facial hair
Either too much money or not enough....
Hang-over.

Nothing on that list for me, fashions are sad as ****. I assumed your bus had to be lowered with polished alloys to be in the scene.

Theres still the odd bargain bus to had out there... i was extremely lucky and bought a 72 crossover westie (pics are on my "new member saying hi" post ).... it was already registered and had mot,,, flew its mot again last mth,,,never been welded it was owned by 1 family in the usa,, and has a full service history inc the original sales receipt....

I like Polished alloys especially Slots 8) ........... However they are too expensive
but if it costs too much money thats OK because the Scene says so !

Two top drawer buses , of very different styles , both sold very quickly on here very recently . Suggests the prices being asked are realistic ?

:)

lol I didn't think so much about the definition of 'the scene' other than classic vw campervan owner in general

What I meant was for example when I was a poor student with only a part time job I afforded to own a bay and a beetle.. and then had a splitty. If that was today I wouldn't have had the opportunity, and even now I wouldn't waste all that cash on a split. So being part of 'the scene' used to be open to everyone but is now a big investment for the elite who can afford it. Even if you were really hard up you could buy a wedge for about £50

I get supply/demand but people are greedy

typical VW for sale ad;

"I brought this van a year ago for 8k, its now a little more rusty, the engines a little more worn, bit less tread on the tyres, bargain at 10k"

If its inclusiveness and absolute affordability you are after instead of a "scene" where the vehicles are not only a form of transport but become somewhat a lifestyle choice and a savvy investment why not buy a couple of old vectras or an estate focus - can pick them up for a couple of hundred quid and may become desirable in the distant future? Think that is what poor students are rolling round in these days?
