Whilst I'm thinking out loud...

Whaddya reckon? Too much hassle to keep in tip-top shape?

Do the repros cut the mustard - or just rust up?

With delux trim or not?

Well stainless wouldn't rust like chrome, so I can't see why chrome is worth bothering with unless its a show vehicle and you really want that deeper shine you can't get with stainless, having said that if its a show vehicle you shouldn't have the problem with them rusting as I'd imagine it wouldn't be sitting out in the rain.
So basically, chrome if you want trophies, stainless if you want to drive it!

Not sure how deluxe trims would work, What would you do with the metal bits? Colour code them or get them chromed as well?

I agree :)

Stainless would be the more practical option. I remember seeing a company on eBay that sold them. Think they were mega £££ though.

Remember reading on this forum there were some for sale at Vanfest. Anybody remember who was selling them, and for what price?

Cheers,

Mike

Stainless would definately be the way forward out the two.

Think SSP do them for about £800+ for the pair if I remember correctly!

Go with stainless, but cut the middle men out, UK suppliers buy them from a company called Harrington classics, based in Ho Chi Ming City for £620 then band a few £100 on top. you can even buy on line here;
http://www.groupharrington.com/shine/vwstep.htm
I will be ordering some for mine, when its finished, if ever!
They have even got a sale on at the mo. Check them out, they do loads of stainless stuff for all vw's and lots more. Great if you are into classic scooters to.

i love stainless, i wouldnt touch chrome as when it starts to pit its too expensive to get rechromed.

Stainless all the looks and no hassleif a little pricy but if it gets a dent scrape you can hammer and polish it out yourself.

Hmm... Winter Sale price is $999 (approx £500) for the pair...

Must admit am *very* tempted as our current plan was to have the bodyshop that's welding/painting our bus re-work our battered up bumpers.

My reasons being:
- Good used front bumper & side-steps (fbi etc) = £100
- Re-working bumper
- Re-painting bumper
- Total cost: £200(approx)

Then another £200(approx) for the rear bumper... So £400+!!! Are these figures realistic?

Based on my approx figures it seems almost worth paying the additional £100 for the new bumpers...

Would they look odd if used with painted bumper mounts???

Anybody used Harringtons? Any idea on the quality of these bumpers?

Lobus has chrome/stainless bumpers with the deluxe trim and they look pretty damn good 8) 8) . Personally I think there are better things to spend your bucks on like wheels, interior, engine mods etc but if you already have those sorted and you have the bucks then go for the stainless.

they trade through ebay too.

hasn't got any bay ones listed but have seen them on here for £499 with £59 postage so mite be worth wile contacting them through ebay and getting them cheaper still. keep an eye on when he re lists them.

I'd say your figures are a bit OTT to be honest, unless you've got a really expensive painters/bodyshop.

At the end of the day though you should go for what you want and what makes you happy. If you want stainless and think they'd look good on your bus go for it. :)

Also, with regard to that 'groupharrington', I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Aparrantly the quality isn't all that, and the fit is awful. Mind you, I've only spoken to people that have used the Ghia bumpers, the bus ones may be a lot better.

My boss has these bumpers, actually thats his 69 Devon "Totty" on the website. They look good and fit well, however they did something daft with his like drill the holes upside down so they were on the wrong part of the curve so he had to adapt his bumper mounts. I'm sure they have sorted this now though.

After seeing the pictures I immediately thought the same thing "no holes for bumper mounts".

Maybe they'd supply them in un-drilled form?

Was it Harrington that was selling these at Vanfest - or were the pair on sale at Vanfest a private seller?

Cheers,

Mike

Got a reply back from Harrington's

"Thanks for your interest in our products.

We currently have our 2007 Winter Sale. So the price for a set of Early Bay Bus bumpers is GBP 479 plus shipping GBP 59 instead of GBP 559 plus shipping. You can save GBP 80 (14% discount)."

So... £538 all in. Will have a chat to the guy working our bus (about our bumpers etc) and see what kind of cost differences are involved.

I agree the bumpers sound expensive, but they should be fit-and-forget items - plus they have a lifetime guarantee against rust - provided Harrington's stay in businsess long enought to honour it ;)
