And no it isn't my wife

From leaving Stanford Hall yesterday, I seem to have developed a loud droning noise whilst driving. It doesn't disappear when I put my foot on the clutch and it gets louder the faster I go :?:

The van is running no differently and the engine sounds fine when it idles and gear change is fine.

Would this point to a wheel bearing?? The noise is always there though no matter if its going round a bend or straight line.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what it may be?? :D

Bearings or Cvs I would think, does it change pitch depending on speed, and does it go away whan you're stationary or out of gear?

Hello mate,

Yes it changes pitch the faster/slower I go and seems to go when doing less than 20 mph and certainly no noise whilst stationary.

I kind of thought that it could be cv's as I had a tear in the boot. I went through a load of mud at Stanford Hall and wondered if it may have got in??

yep sounds like cv`s to me , grazy had the same problem and found that the bolts were loose , tightened up and all was good , for a while anyway, gotta change all mine as they all have tears , really looking forward to getting real greasy ( not)
good to see ya both ;)

get a good one put 4 on last year need to change 2 all ready showing signs of splitting :(

I would say C.V joints, wheel bearings tend to make more noise as you corner.

Matt

Are you sure its not Lisa

Quick test dood, get hold of one of your front wheels with both hands a give it a shake, if you here a knock or anything unusual it could be a bearing. Check on both fronts 8)

Jack it up and check each wheel in turn. One hand at 12 o'clock one at 6 o'clock and try to rock it, any play can be felt and would point to the bearing. Try just spinning each wheel as well, sometimes a noise can be heard or some roughness felt as the wheel rotates. If either is found, unbolt the driveshaft and repeat. If the symptom persists then the bearing is prime suspect, if not then perhaps CV or gearbox?
Have to say I have never known a CV joint to make a droning noise. Bearings whine and drone, CV joints knock and bang.
Really difficult to be sure without hearing it myself, and if it is a CV joint then it wouldn't be the first time I was proved wrong but my money (10p, times is hard :D ) is on a bearing.
The clutch possibility seems to be out the window, and in the absence of any comment regarding vibration felt (quite possible with a dodgy CV), I'll put my 10p where my mouth is.
Also discounting a front wheel bearing, you or Lisa would be sat on top of it and the direction the noise is coming from quite obvious.
Good luck, hope you get it sorted quickly, easily and cheaply mate.

Funnily enough I picked the van up today and drove it home without my wife in the van and have to say the droning noise had gone

They had actually replaced the drivers front wheel bearing to sort the problem though

Also had new valves re-ground and an air leak on the carb sorted and the it drives like a different van now. I can't believe i had got to Spa and back with the number 4 valve being as bad as it was

Thanks everyone for your replies :D

Glad its sorted mate, can you text me how much their hourly charge is please? ;)
