A mate came round today with the intention of timing my engine with his timing light / strobe.
Even though i had statically timed it he re-checked it and then then we started it up, the timing was way out, tried adjusting it and if the timing was set a 5*ATDC then the engine just wouldn't run.
Looking at all the books, Haynes, how to keep your VW alive, it was noticed that the dizzy seems to be 90* out.
All the pictures show ( o being the middle HT lead)
Front
3-2
0
4-1

but mine is

2 -1
o
3 -4
even though the plug leads are correct, No1 at TDC is 90* from where the pictures say it should be
Does this matter and if so is there a way of correcting it?

This i swhat i thought butall the diagrams i have seen shows no1 lead at the bottom right position but mine is at the top right, also the notch in the dizzy body indicating no1 position is at the top right

Mexican dissy?

Cheers, think that is exactly what i was trying to say.
All leads set as they should be just can't get the timing to set up correctly

Pull No.1 spark plug and put a pencil into the cylinder and rotate the engine by hand to try to feel TDC, see if it lines up with the pulley mark...

Statically everything lines up fine, just wanted to time it up properly but know when using a strobe the timing is way off, if i set the timing to 5ATDC (correct according to oldvolkshome) then it just wont run
Would the Mexican (?) dizzy i apperently have use the same settings?

I thought that some factory dizzys were 90 degrees out, mine is and pretty sure it hasnt been played with. will try to remember to dig the part number out. have a look on volkszone seem to remember seeing some info on there in the mech tech section.

A good way to tell is whether the vacuum advance can is in the right place when your dizzy appears 90 degrees out. Seem to remember mine being 90 degrees anti clockwise out.

This is what we did, just wanted to double check as all diagrams refering to the dizzy showed the notch at 5 o'clock where as mine is at 2 o'clock
