I believe my engine is running hot,. It's a 1600 as21 case .,, checked timing with strobe gun and set to 7.5 degrees btdc
Carb is a bocar 34 pct , the tick over screw is all the way in and it idles fine,.. After 5 mins of running on the drive , the oil dipstick is too hot to touch,..
Do I need the carb rebuilding...,
Also cooling flaps are fixed open and no thermostat fitted,.

heat exchangers or j tubes!

if j tubes run industrial tin or ya airflow will be directed in the wrong place ie not the engine!

took me three engines to figure that out.

Just had similar with mine, and the basics to check are

Ignition timing. Isn't 7.5 deg the static, it's about 28 btdc at 3000rpm with a gun

I had 2 valves virtually shut, so adjusted the tappers

Points gap ok ?

I guess you instinctively know when your bus is running hot, not sure I would just rely on a hot dipstick.

Also check to see if the thermostat and flaps are opening when the engine has warmed up and check there is nothing obstructing the fan and all the tinware is in place, tubes connected, engine seal in place etc.

The tickover screw being all the way in would indicate the carb is not adjusted correctly or needs attention - though I can't see how that would cause overheating when the engine is idling.

And you have checked the oil cooler is free of oily crap and flowing air through it ?
I think his flaps are missing.

Like JTH suggests, if running j tubes then make sure you fit side deflectors to get the cooling air to pass through and around the cylinders and heads.

The flaps are fitted, has fresh oil, and heat exchangers are fitted and all tinware in place
