Just took my 71 on a 100 mile round trip yesterday - on the way back last night, braking down a long hill to a set of lights.
As soon as I stopped the bugger stalled :x ......this happenned again 10 mins later, then 40 miles home without a problem.
any clues??? :|

first check conection to idle cut off soleniod ,then see if contact gap has closed ,might just be muck in idle jet,can clear itself some times if ok now or worryingly(big word for monday afternoon :!: )engine could have got to hot cooling system/seals ok?

Hiya Spence,

The engine stalling out after a downhill is symptom of an incorrect fuel pressure. Usually the fuel pump and usually too much pressure.

However, this usually happens after a new fuel pump is installed. Inasmuch as your Bus just developed this situation "naturally" I'd be inclined to go along with 67's line of thought. How long has it been since you gave the carburetor a good cleaning? Doesn't take much to obstruct that idle circuit in a 34PICT3. Fuel filter(s) clean?

Hi Mike/67

thanks for the info. only had the bus 6 months and all been cool so far -
will take a look at the weekend -
it probably could do with a good service before winter sets in anyhow.
Cheers :D

another thing that vw suffer is the fact that they can easily get an overly rich mixture on sudden deacceleration and choke up and cut out. i think it's the sudden increase in air velocity when the butterfly closes, it draws up loads of fuel (preassure difference). when i ran a beetle it used to do it. coasting keeps things turning and running, but when you come to a stop, it's all too much for the engine and it conks out.

food for thought?

Hmmmmm.
Last night I took it out for a spin.....
Took it up to 40 in 3rd to increase the revs then stopped at end of road
It happened again!
No hills to been seen this time?
What do you reckon...is the colder autumn air something to do with it?
shall I put in new plugs/points/rotor arm...will that help?
they are the same ones as when I got the bus 6 months ago - could have been on since
the bus came over from California 12 months ago!

My old bugs never done this ...only a clapped out 70's mini !!!
:( :x :?

Check carb set up and mixture is ok and re check timing.
I had the same prob on an old bus which ran fine for months and then cut out going down hills, i re timed and all was ok,
not saying this is a definate fix but it worked for me. ;)

My old engine had a simular problem with it's Solex, everytime i came to a stop, lights, roundabout etc as i depressed the clutch the engine would just stop, no back fire, judders or anything. The cut-off valve had buggered up :? screwed in a new 1 and that solved the problem and it ran perfect :D

It might be the same thing with yours or the float in the carb might be sticking causing it to over fuel

out of curiosity, if you do this overrun and stopping over a short distance it cuts out. what if you overrun for a longer distance before stopping? i'm thinking this business about choking itself; done over a longer distance it might have chance to 'catch up' with itself and not cut out. doesn't help, but might help indicate the problem?

also i'm sure it doesn't help with the temps dropping now colder, richer mixtures for longer. does it still do it once everythings nice and hot?

Hey

I once had a problem with my bus, that every time i stopped, it went out. (It did idle ok).
After a lot of swapping carburettors i finally found the problem... it was my inlet manifold that was totally blocked in the small pipes.
I changed it for a brand new one, and all problems with cutting out was gone.

Must mention my engine is single ported and the small tubes (pipes) are smaller than the ones on a double ported.
But its worth checking.
You should be able to blow air through the pipes. If not, clean it or replace it.
Also clean your carburettor as described earlier. (or try with another one, you know is ok)
Good luck

Ronnie

Just another suggestion...

Is your van servoed?

We had one a while back that would die if you pumped the brake pedal due to a leak in the vacuum take off for the servo.

Also are you running a standard air filter and is the hot air feed connected up? Alot of hot climate busses don't have the hot air feed connected and then they all start doing weird things when idling when the cold weather starts.
